PowerDVD 6 (Image Darkness Problem)

    Hey guys,

I usually use DivX Player 6.2 or Windows Media Player 11, to watch movies but it has become a hassle when I want to take a screencap (reducing the acceleration, PRT SCRN, normal acceleration, paste in Photoshop C5, etc...) so I went with Cyberlink's PowerDVD 6 Deluxe (because of the convenient screencap button) and got all the available enhancement packs...

HOWEVER, the image is always very dark (Example) and unlike the aforementioned programs, I can't adjust the color manually... and none of the automatic settings (CLEV-2, Vivid, Bright, etc..) resolve the issue.

I looked around in the program's help section and it said "Click on Configuration, select the Video tab, click Advanced..., and then select the Color tab." yet there is NO [Color Tab] in the advanced video properties (Look at attachment)! It goes on to state... "For adjusting the Color Control, simply drag and release one of the options when in playback or pause mode. The counter to the right of each color displays the degree of modification." yet when in playback mode or paused, the [Video tab] doesnt even appear!!!

Anybody know of a way I can brighten the image in PowerDVD? I would really hate to have to uninstall it. Alternatively, know of any screencapture programs I could use without having to do the old long process?

    Actually might have something.

Just checked my v5.0 again & noticed that you have to manually change one of the settings which I had not done. Look at your pic & it looks like you need to the same.

Go back to your configuration setup (right hand side) & make this change......Tick CLEV-2. Leave it set on full.

Don't know if that will fix any brightness issue but it will be set right.

If you can change the brightness using your video card try that.

    Hey Hipster Doofus,

Thanks for the response, been going nuts trying to figure it out... I know I could just use another program (like DivX or WMP11) but its killing me not to be able to figure this out, guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm more interested in solving this problem for the sake of solving it rather than the end result itself

I've actually tried all the possible combinations (CLEV-2 included) and nothing seems to affect the dark playback... anyways, I'll set it to CLEV-2 and leave it. I know I have a crappy video card (Intel 82815 Graphics Controller) but I dont know how to change the brightness through it... I'd appreciate any nudge in the right direction!

Check out PowerStrip. I have not used it in a long time but it might do the trick.

My powerdvd 5 has the same issue as yours.

If I change the brightness through my video card, that will just change the brightness for my monitor, and although the powerDVD image will clear up, so will the rest of the images displayed in the desktop and other programs... making me want to rip my eyes off, cuz of how bright everything is :)

On sidenote, I hate how a program so functional and great as powerDVD can be so limited in configuration... incidently I had powerDVD 7 before this and it was so bad, I uninstalled it and went for v.6 instead.

I guess I'll try PowerStrip hopefully, it'll do a better job! (can I still use it having the Intel Graphics controller?)

Yeah know what you mean. I rarely use powerdvd. I use WMP. At least it's easy to adjust the brightness.

Too bad you can't get your card to kick in when powerdvd is started.

When changing the gamma correction through the intel graphics controller software, the brightness/contrast of my monitor changes, yet the playback remains really dark! Argghhh, so frustrating!

You'll have to check the powerstrip site out. Looks like they have good support.

You not starting to look like your avatar are you? :D :D

The only reason I've kept powerDVD so far is because of the great screencap button it has (love it) If I could only find a program that could do that, I'd ditch powerDVD so fast... I've searched the forums for options on screencapping programs and they have come up with Snagit ($), Handysnap, XnView and ScreenHunter.. dont know which one to choose...

What do you use to screencap? Do you reduce the acceleration and print screen the image? I hate doing that... having to change settings all the time just for a simple screencap, and most of the time the image is so poor doing it this way.

LOL... Nah, just pulling my hair out in quiet desperation!

The only reason I chose that avatar was because it was the only small-somewhat funny-medically related pic I could find in my 'puter. I'm a GP with some time off (probably month or two) while I wait for my test scores to come back, in order to get into the surgical residency program here in Costa Rica.

I actually tried this and it worked! No messing around with the video acceleration (etc...) just use WMP and press PRTSCRN followed by Ctrl-i and save the image wherever you want!

I'm tired of powerDVD    I'm uninstalling the bloated software... not even after installing ALL the enhancement packs in both v.6 and v.7 did the quality ever surpass that of DivX or WMP. Such an easy solution, who wouldve ever thought about it?

Ahhh, no more powerDVD playback issues hanging over my head... gonna go get a good night's sleep.

Thanks for everything Hipster, I guess I'll see you around :D
