Open Office is totally compatible with Microsoft. I believe Libreoffice is no longer free (may be wrong though)

LibreOffice is 100% free to download and use.

Both OpenOffice and LibreOffice may require Java runtime for some components to function correctly

LibreOffice was founded when someone (could have been Oracle but I'm not sure) decided to start charging for OpenOffice. The developers all left OpenOffice and formed a new company/program.
Eventually charging for OpenOffice was deemed a bad decision and now it is again free.
