hello, please have patience with me, here goes, hp pavilion vista home premium, 3gb, 500gb, a few weeks ago it started turning off by itself, i checked for all kinds of ware in safe mode, it did not shut off in safe mode, ever. all my scans turned up nothing, i have cats, the fan seemed to be running loud as in making noise when it came on, a grinding noise, sometimes puter would run for hours sometimes minutes then just shut off. it happened when i was on it and when i was not on it. kept getting worse as in more frequent shutdowns, still doing scans and just the usual cookies and junk. figured cat hair, talked to someone who is computer literate they agreed opened it up used canned air cleaned cakes of dust and one large wad of cat hair. put it back together it was so quiet i thought sure it was fixed then about 5 minutes off it went, waited 2-3 hours turned it back on watched some videos it went off again, left it off , overnight came in this afternoon was going to turn it on and try it again and now it will not com on, dvd tray does eject and there is a light under the power cord in the back but it will not power up, PLEASE, PLEASE, HELP ME, i am disabled this is my entertainment, oh and did i mention i am a computer dummy! seriously! i know i havent included something important, so please let me know what else you need to know. God bless :cry

Is it a laptop or a desktop computer? It definately sounds like overheating was your initial issue... So when you power it on it doesn't boot, but you can open/close the dvd ROM... Are you getting anything at all on your display? A blinking cursor, the HP logo, anything?

its a desktop, nothing, not even a light in front showing its got power, thats why i opened and clsed tray and in back under power cord, the power light was on, no nothing on screen, dead, my poor poor baby, lol, monitor doesnt even power up. i know monitor is working cause i plugged it to my laptop so i could see it better, thanks :confused

It's possible your power supply is done, specifically, the mobo connection output. The green light at the back indicates that you're getting power TO the PSU, and if your peripheral power connections were still good that would explain the DVD rom continuing to work. Do you have another power supply you could have somebody install and try out for you? That would probably be your best bet at this point. Also, when you said your fan was making noise, were you referring to the PSU fan or the processor fan?

so when u say power supply u not talking about power cord, right, hehehe, cause that would be to easy, no i will have to take to have repairs done, so if thats it, what would u think would be highest price i would be charged ? about fan, i'm not sure it just sounded like it was working harder, we did get some crusted dirty looking stuff when we used can air, and a wad of cat hair, lol

The power supply (PSU) is the unit at the top rear of your tower (inside) that the power cord plugs into. As far as servicing price goes, it's hard to say. In saying that, installing a new PSU is not a very difficult job. I would try speaking to your friend that opened up your computer in the first place and see if it's something he/she is comfortable doing. Not a huge job, and having it done yourself would save you some good $$. Remember though, if you decide to do it yourself, before you go out and purchase a new one make sure that is has a high enough wattage rating to support your system, and that it's compatible. Good luck!

    Hi_n,

All Windows programs etc. are not loaded in Safe Mode. That's an indication that some part of Windows is missing or corrupted. Run SFC /Scannow. It may correct the bad parts of Windoze.

    Luck, Jim
