Preparing to install sp3

Hey so as you might know the last time I tried to install windows sp3 it was sometime around in june. I ran into some major problems after I installed sp3 such as the reboot loop. I read about it and it was probably because I have a Hewlett Packard/AMD based computer. So now windows updates is asking me through the automatic updates to install sp3 again I want to install it but I do not want what happened before to happen again. So what should I do so what happened before doesnt happen again?

I have that installed already it was provided by the automatic hp update. So should I go along with the instaall?

 

If you haven't tried to install sp3 after installing the patch from HP then go ahead with the install of sp3.

If the patch doesn't work here is a workaround for the problem:

Boot into Safe Mode

Click 'Start'>>'Run'

In Run type regedit, then click OK

In regedit navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm

In the right panel, examine the value "Start"

Change the 'Start' value to 4 instead of its setting of 1.

To do this, right click on the value "Start" in the right panel and choose Modify.

Type in 4 and click OK.

After this you should be able to install sp3.

If you would rather not try to install sp3 and do not want Automatic Updates to install it, you can block the install:

In regedit navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

In the right pane, right click in an empty area and select new>> DWORD and type in DoNotAllowSP click OK.

Right click on DoNotAllowSP and select Modify.

In the box that opens type 1 then click OK.

This block is only temporary I think till May of 2009 when MS will install sp3 regardless of this registry key.
