Presario 2140 'hiccups'

My daughter had a virus and we had to wipe the drive and reinstall, except she did not have the original restore disc (XP). I installed a purchased XP SP2 and the drivers on discs she still had. Now the system hiccups by running normally for about 3 seconds, freezing for 1 second, and repeating.

I have formatted, reinstalled, downloaded all the updated drivers, and everything else I can think of. Even formatted and installed Tiny XP. No luck. I guess it's a hardware issue, but it's odd that it didn't do this at any time before, and only started hiccuping after the install. In-fact, it does not hiccup until the install is complete - then it's an issue.

Examples of the issue:

Moving the pointer, it will glide fine, freeze, then jump to where it should be.

Typing in NotePad, it will do fine for 3 seconds, then ignore typing for 1 second, and continue for 3 more, and so on.

I know it's old, but it's useful for what she needs in school right now and I don't have the funds to get a replacement for her. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a way to test the hardware? Or are there any tell-tales in some software testing I can do? I ran What's Running and don't see any intermittent CPU usage. Any other ideas, please?

 

Go to your ''RUN'' option and type msconfig from there a page will open, choose 'Startup'' make a note of the boxes that are ticked, then press ''disable all'', tick the top prog and reboot then try typing/moving pointer and if OK go back to msconfig and tick the next box and repeat until you find the fault returns. This is a way of testing software. Post back with results.
