does a "preview" over on the side in explorer really qualify as a file being "open"? suddenly, i'm finding i cannot move, delete, or rename PDF files b/c "preview handler surrogate host" is using them. this started after i enabled my browser (or so i thot!) to handle PDF files.

oddly, i can rename and move IMAGE files (jpg, gif, etc) even tho they're being previewed as well. guess that's a plain-ole "preview" sans "surrogate host" issues?

short of undoing that browser enable, how do i turn off preview. like short-term, for a given file or a given span that i'm working?

for that matter, where is UNDO DELETE etc in w7 explorer?! i do it with ^Z at the moment, but gone are all the pull downs for view, tools, about, etc that i had in XP. (still present in my IE; just not explorer) nor can i figure out where the list of OPTIONAL TOOLBARS is hiding!

    :confused

Hit the ALT key then select Edit, then Undo Delete. Or just use CTRL + Z. That is what I do.

If you want to keep the menu up, then you need to click ALT, then Tools, Folder Options, then the View tab, then check the box "Always show menus". Then if you want this for all folders, click "Apply to Folders".

I personally keep the menu off. I don't need it unless I have to use it for something.

    ALT!

wow, who told that bar to autohide in the first place?! my XP certainly never did this.

i may leave it off now that i know how to call it back. thanks!

funny, it summons said bar to IE as well, but in that i have ANOTHER bar (or half-bar) listing mostly the same things, so i didn't miss it.

aniwe, now back to those previews.... :(

I've never used preview until now (took me a minute before i could find it). However, i've not had any issues like being unable to move the file out of that folder. did you see the little square-ish button on the top right of the window that lets you change the layout of an explorer window, to include preview or not? a simple click and the preview goes away.

D'OH! i've been in and out of every "view", "format", "customize folder" setting i can find -- how did i miss THAT?!

preview is now OFF and i can finally RENAME a file! moochers g!!
