Was wondering if anyone could lend some knowledge with a "quirk" I am having with a network printer. I have two printers hooked to my pc; one is a photo inkjet with direct USB connection the other is a HP laserjet via network printing, the inkjet work perfectly fine but the laserjet is giving me a tussle. The printer is being recognized but throwing an error message with the current printer setup. I have unistalled all driver/s and any software pertaining to it. I went back to HP site and downloaded and installed all current driver and software versions just to get hte same error message. The printer works with all other network computers except this one. Not asking anyone to let the cat out of the bag just trying to find a solution to the problem.:major

is it connected to another computer, or is it a wireless printer?

You gave a very informative tip--it works with the other computers on the network.

Start looking at firewall permissions. To test, temporarilydrop your firewall. Windows firewall counts in this case, if thats the one.

It is a printer connected to another printer, there are 3 computers on the network. I dropped the firewalls temporarily as suggested (Kaspersky2010 and Windows firewall) but get the same result.

On this computer, does the printer report itself as online, or offline?

    Can you ping it?

what is the operating system and computer name of the computer that the printer is hooked up to?

Well, no need to ping just yet. The Computer doesnt see a connection to the printer.

Go to properties of the printer, and then...if memory serves, there should be a port tab, or button. What port is being used?

OS is XP Pro x64, the port being used is HPLaserJetM1522nMFP

Ok. So this is where I need to understand--is the printer on a network standalone, meaning it has an ethernet cable hooked to it, or is it hooked to a computer, then shared?

It is on a network standalone not hooked to another computer then shared.
My apologies the late night got the best of my early mornings.

Ok, go into the network config settings ON the printer, and see what the IP address is.

Go to start, run, or the orb, search, depending on the OS:

Type cmd and hit enter. In the command prompt type:

    ping <ip address> minus the <>

Ok, good. Remember the ports screen we were at? Go back to it, and made a new port. We are creating a tcp/ip port, with the ip address you found from the network printer. Leave the settings as they are, otherwise. Make sure that port is active, and IF! no firewall is blocking the printer, it should show online.

Hey Guys thanks for all the info on getting this thing back online. The once head-scratching troublesome problem has been resolved and the remedy was a software change from HP. The printer had previously been online and worked with the configuration I was using but somehow the driver became ineffctive; as I said I tried reloading the driver from HP but to no avail. I then search the site again for the driver problem and noticed a software packaged not previously used. I installed the package and everything is working fine. If not for Major Geeks I probably would have thrown my hands up and said here it is. I am glad I can bring you guys a knee slapper every now and then. :-D
