I've tried to connect HP Laserjet P1102 with my mac pro running el capitan. I used USB cable since the printer doesn't support wireless. On connecting, message comes up that says "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer". It then gives me the opportunity to either reject or ignore.

No matter what option I use, it doesn't help.

I have scoured the forums but so far have not found anything useful. Particularly for El Capitan, apple made some changes over older versions that removed some functionality.

    Printer worked ok with windows.

    Any solutions? Thanks.

You need the correct software for a Mac. On the HP site it has a downloads and drivers section for that HP Model where you have to tell it your exact Mac Operating System on that device.

I downloaded the drivers from HP yesterday, but didn't install them, since I wanted to make sure what I was doing. The other issue is the Apple support forums are full of issues about el Capitan and HP P1102 not working, and no easy workaround. So I thought my best bet was to ask here before doing installation.

Today, I've gone through the rigmarole again, and step by step the HP site has led me to Apple site, where the same driver set is available. Now I'm downloading from Apple. I'm still unsure if this is the solution, since the message I get shows that Printer is being recognized by the mac as a disk. Let's see.

After going through the various threads on Apple support, it seems the following options exist for el capitan:

    1. Driver update.

    2. Firmware update. Not sure if this is applicable to el capitan.
This is a comment I've copied from here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6741123:
    Fixed for me.
Repairing permissions did not fix it for me, instead updating printer firmware did the trick.
Also, this problem only existed through usb wire connection and not with the wireless connection, so i connected wirelessly and updated the firmware, restart and usb cable connection works normally again. Hope this helps.

    3. Using Repair Permissions. This does not exist in el capitan any more, so there's a work around as I pated below.

Shlomi's advice won't work with El Captain. Go to this link: http://osxdaily.com/2015/11/04/verify-repair-permissions-mac-os-x/. There are step by step instructions. I don't know Terminal at all, but I still managed to fumble my way thru it.

For me no 3 is not good, since I'm a non techie.

Asking people here before I proceed.
