Printer prints for one account, not for the other account

On our computer (Dell), when my wife logs in to her account, she cannot print anything, period. No Word documents, nothing from notepad or wordpad...nada. :(

However, if I log into my account (mine is an administrative account, if that makes any difference), I can print anything I want, including any of my documents, anything from notepad, wordpad, or I can go into her documents folder and print any of her documents. :)

But I hate :cry this "workaround," and I'm hoping someone can give me a simple, quick pointer to turn it (whatever "it" is) back "on." I might have overlooked something obvious in the printer settings... We have two printers, and I can print to both of them from my account, but I cannot print to either of them from my wife's account.

I (we) will be forever thankful to anyone who tells me how to solve this seemingly simple problem. :wave

have you checked to make sure the is installed under her profile?

Yes, the printer is installed under her profile. When she sends the "Print" command in Word, for instance, the spooling printer at the bottom of the Word page comes on and indicates it is going to the printer, then the printer symbol in the windows tray (bottom right of the screen) comes on as it should, but only momentarily, then it disappears, and nothing happens at the printer...

Thanks for the response and the question. I hope I understood what you were asking. :confused

ok that is what i wanted to know. have you tried uninstalling it, rebooting the system and then reinstalling it? if not try that. make sure download the latest drivers for your printer and use those to install the printer

:-D When I changed her account to administrator a few minutes ago, lo and behold, she is able to print anything she wants. However, I am uneasy with keeping her account as an administrator in Windows Explorer.

:confused I believe the printer connections, drivers, etc. are okay, but it is some kind of software issue...WindowsXP Explorer...No? Limited account cannot print, but should be able to, and changing it to an administrator account gives permission to print hard copies.

:wave If you can jump ahead in this and tell me what to check/do next, I will be glad to do that. Do I need to move to the software thread? Thanks for your replies thus far.

what you can try is "sharing the printer" go to a different admin account and share the printer. she should then be able to print from any account on system. silly i know but sometimes you just have roll with windows little quirks

Thanks for your suggestion. I went into my account (administrator) and designated it to "share" the printer. After changing my wife's account back (to a limited account) I couldn't print. :cry

So I captured the event (print failure), pasted it into a word document, and have sent it along with this reply, ;) thinking this might shed some light on the matter. I haven't gone to the web site to decipher the failure message error code yet, but I will as soon as I can find the time this evening or tomorrow afternoon.

Meanwhile, if anyone knows what this error code means, I would welcome an interpretation that might indicate what to do next. :wave (And many thanks again in advance.)

ok what that code means is access denied. thats what i thought your issue was. there are 2 ways to tackle this before start hacking windows. first is turn your wifes account to administrator and reinstall the drivers only. second is uninstall completly and install it under your wifes acccount using your admin privilages or as your wife as a full admin account. try any of those in any order and let us know how it goes

I found one very old thread where a non-admin could not print to the printer. This is what worked

You guys are unbelievably awesome. :cool I went to the printer settings in my account and turned off spooling. :-D Next I logged out of my account and into my wife's "limited" account and, voila, she can print anything she wants. :p

I can't thank you enough for solving my problem.

I'll never pay another penny of my hard-earned money to some of the locals as long as I can get the fantastic help available in these forums. This has been a fantastic experience!!! Thanks again, guys n gals. :wave
