I had a spyware issue. I removed it. Now, for some reason, my computer cannot find my printer. When I try to print a document, it says no printer found. When I go to control panel (I have windows XP) and try to add a printer, I get an error message like "operation failed." When I tried to re-load the printer driver, I get an error message "RPC server unavailable."

Any suggestions about how to solve are much appreciated!

What Service Pack version do you have on XP? + do you have all updates? if not you are leaving yourself open to further nastys!

check under Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services that the RPC Remote Procedure Call is not Disabled if it is start it up and make sure its set to Automatic.

Thanks. Well, we only had Service Pack v. 1. We just updated to v. 2.

The RPC Remote Procedure Call was already set to Automatic.

Any other thoughts? I appreciate your help!

yeah... back into Services and check to see if the Print Spooler is set also to Auto and the service is started ( this service does affect printers being seen in the Printer & Fax Folder )

The print spooler was set on auto, but not started. When we tried, we got an error message "the dependency or group service failed error 1068"

    what printer do you have?

wild guess Lexmark! if so look for a Service called LEXBCE SERVER and start that ( just I noticed this is a common failure with this brand )

Nice guess, but it is actually an HP. At least I know I am not alone . . .

I fixed it by deleting the LEXBCE service, which for some reason was a dependency for the print spooler but it could not be started.

Thanks for all your help! You guys rock.
