Alright, so it's me again, and this time it's a printer problem. Being the dumb blonde that I am, anything computer related sails right over my head. I recently refilled my black cartridge with ink, and after replacing it, the computer now doesn't recognize it. I keep getting error reports saying to check the printer's door (it's a HP Series 1400, All in One), or that the cartridge hasn't been inserted properly. I took it out a couple times and snapped it back in place, but still same reports. This isn't the first time I've changed the ink. But it's the first time I'm having this problem. Should I completely uninstall the printer and install it back?

Did you refill the ink before, or just use a new cartridge?

I refilled the ink before. I haven't put in a new cartridge as yet.

That happens some time, could be the ink (quality) could be anything, but if your printer still does not recognice the cartridge, better change it for a new one, seems to me that for some reason died. That is why I always look for cheaper cartridges, but some of them (like Lexmark) say ... if you buy this version... this cannot be refilled... buy this cartridge version... (29 & 29A, for example). Let us know!!!

    Hi Deliah,
Haven't used HP for years. Assuming it's a traditional HP with print head attached.
If that cartridge sat around awhile before you filled it the head is probably clogged with dried ink. Black ink carts are easy. Just sit it in a cup with about 1/8" (enough to cover the head) of water or cleaner. Usually gets it going again. Color cart will mix the colors if you do that so, just set the head against a folded up damp paper towel. If cart is not to be refilled right away cover the vents and head with cellophane tape. Maybe?

    Good Luck, Jim

well, i did all the things i was told to do. (cleaned the cartridge, without touching the contacts, and made sure it was snapped in properly and the door was securely closed)...but no luck :(

maybe i'll have to end up buying a new cartridge, but i'm annoyed bc my sis bought the same kinda refill ink for her printer and it works fine. argh...rolleyes

maybe u're right @ chapincito. maybe it isn't a quality of ink that my "royal" HP cartridge can adapt to.

I'll bet your sister doesn't have the same model of HP printer.
Newer printers have a chip that records something about the cartridge. From reading, you need three different cartridges to swap around because the printer won't let you take an empty cartidge, refill it and insert the same cartridge back in.

    Hi again Deliah,

True, some printer cartridges now have a chip stuck on that records info about the usage and ID of the cartridge. It's not connected electrically to the cartridge in any way it just lives there. Some will not let you reuse the cartridge by refilling. Some refuse to let you use the cartridge again if you just remove it from the printer. I use Epson so, really don't know much about the latest HP carts. I purchased a chip resetter on EBay ($8.00) that will reset any Epson cartridge chip and I refill both black and color carts for the Epson. If that's your problem google for a HP resetter.

    Good Luck, Jim
