My girlfriends printer has been working fine and then suddenly it just stopped one day and it says that the parts need servicing and she is unable to use it now. Its an Epson C44x. This might seem a stupid question but hey i guess you're used to them on here, but does this definately mean that the printers knackered or can she pass on the service and still use it? Does this mean that theres something damaged? Can she just uninstall the printer and try to reinstall it again, would that work?

    Thanks,

    Calv.

What i mean is, is this message she has to take notice of otherwise she wont be able to use the printer again, or is it something they just tell you now and again but you can get away with not getting it serviced? Would like to know if its possible to bypass this and continue using the printer?

    Thanks

Dont use Epson printers personally, but did a quick search on this issue and it seems as if when the cleaning heads ( ink waste pads ) get full of gunked up ink I guess over time and print head cleaning routines, get to a certain time period they need replacing.. hence the service message.

I did come across a utility to change some of the service options on Epsons which can keep you going BUT I would stress... I wouldnt know if carrying on using the printer would damage the printer in some way.

this is the utility if you wish to use it http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

Don't quote me on this as it's from memory but on a lot of Epson printer models they have a "Waste Ink Pad" and a counter which keeps track of usage.

If the pad becomes full or the counter reaches a predetermined limit, it will cause a "Maintenance Request Error" causing all the lights to flash.

The counters are set at a very low amount (I wonder why?) so even though it may say to get it serviced, in most cases there is really nothing wrong with it.

The utilities available usually freeze and/or reset the counter, and most work very well, but they aren't designed to be repeatedly used.

If you keep resetting the counter then after a while the Waste Ink Pads will become full and overflow.

You can either buy new Waste Ink Pads, or believe it or not some people was theirs out.

If this is the first time it has done this then the utility is fine. Just don't expect it to work endlessly.

Also be aware doing any of this will void your warranty, and everything has a risk factor, albeit small.
