Drew lets stick to the Win98 PC first. This is where the printer is physically connected. Right? Let's get the printer working there first. I thought that was working before.

Are you now saying your Win98 PC does not even boot?

Drew, connect to your router and tell me what these two fields say.
Host Name: (Required by some ISPs)
Domain Name: (Required by some ISPs)

No that's not what I'm saying.. The Printer connected to the Windows 98 pc works fine and I can boot that pc fine. Works well, connects to the internet and all that jazz. What I was saying was that when I try to add a network printer on my xp machine, no printer shows up in the add printer wizard. This is the problem we had from the beginning. Now what I also said is that on my XP machine when I go to my network places no computers show up unlike before I restarted m XP machine. So the question was why does this happen and why am I still not being able to see my Windows 98 machine or printer on my XP machine. Do you have AIM or any messaging service like that. It might be easier to talk on there instantly. Let me know

How can I connect to my router? Just type in my IP address in the internet explorer?

  5. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok connected to my router and both of those feilds are blank. It says Host Name: Nothing is written here
Domain Name: Nothing is written here either
Hopefully this information is what you needed.

No I have not used AIM for ages. I think I still have it on one of my other PCs but I never use it.

Your XP system is the wireless system right? Double click on the wireless cards icon in your system tray and take a look at the info given there for the network addresses, and SSID, channel, WEP, and WEP key setting. Make sure the network info is as stated below. And make sure the SSID, channel WEP, and WEP key settings agree with what you home page on the router indicate.

Can you cut and paste a picture of your router's Status page here.

  8. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok, yes normally my XP computer is the wireless computer but to better assist us I thought maybe I should hardwire my computer to the router. So I will need to restart and put in the network card and then come back and give you the information. I tried to copy and paste what the status page on the router looks like but it will not let me do so. So just give me about five minutes and I will put in the wireless card and post the information. :)

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok I have restarted and I now I am looking for my network card in my system tray. I see the wireless conection Icon, and I double click that went into properties and should I click configure or how can I get the information you requested?

  10. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok..I clicked on the wireless connection icon in the system tray, went to support and then details. Now it is showing my IP address as 192.168.2.104 however I see no information on the SSID Channel etc. that you asked for.

  11. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Okay. But if you make changes during these message exchanges without telling me (like putting in a different network card) you are only going to make things more difficult for me because I will not know of changes that could impact the configuration. Yes, the hard wire card could simplify things initially by allowing us to rule out any misconfiguration there. So it's fine if you want to go hardwired for the time being. Just let me know in you next message if we are hardwire or running wireless on the XP system.

  12. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

I hardwired the computer with a network cable to the router way before you came on earlier and made your first post. I am now connected wirelessly. Sorry if that has complicated things.

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    Okay! We are wirless.

You said "I see no information on the SSID Channel etc. that you asked for"
This should be right on the first thing that comes up (I think it is called Link Information).
You should see the network info (IP address, subnet, gateway etc) on one part and the
other info should be right next to it. You can also see this from the Site Info tab.

  14. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok, so you want me to log into the router not look for it on my system tray?? I will do that..

  15. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

No! Your first post in this thread said "Also I have a linksys wireless B router hardwired to the main computer and a wireless access card on the laptop computer to connect to the internet."

  16. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Both places have this information (and they need to agree), but what I asked just below was what the wireless card info in the system tray indicates.

But what I still want is the info from your router's Status tab.

  17. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok, now I am wireless...I am connected the same way as in my first post..

  18. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok this is what it says in the routers status tab. (I am wirelessly connected just to make that completely clear! :) lol)

Watching this thread for a bit as its gotten long and not resolved and I wonder if you considered upgrading to XP on the other machine. I will admit networking is NOT my strong point, but it is my understanding it can be a bit of a hassle networking XP and 98, where with XP I have had no troubles at all. I have had hassles here sharing a printer, so I will not pretend to know how to solve it. If all else fails, there are wireless print servers you may consider.

Major, the problem is in the incorrect provisioning of his router to begin with. I have multiple Win98 systems, XPs, Win2K all running fine on a network with printer sharing (some on print servers and some shared off of a server PC). It is easy and strait foward. If you read through the thread though you will see a bunch of back and forth due to some incorrect information being relayed. That's part of the reason I seem to get a little snippy awhile ago while asking for directions to be followed and for correct info to be given back.

I have not considered upgrading to XP, however I have considered buying a new pc and throwing the 98 machine off of a very very high roof. I think I may need anger management. lol

Okay now I have this info. Go back and edit the previous message now with all your personal address info and xxx out your personal address info to keep hackers out.

But note. You must have been changing things in the router. Your provisioning is not matching what you computers are set to. You PCs are on 192.168.2.x , you cannot have the router on 192.168.1.x.

  23. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Could the problem be in the configuration of the network. I mean I may have picked the wrong options when I tried the setup or change a home or small business network. Should I try this over?

  24. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

I haven't changed anything in the router..I don't even know how to change things in the router..I have only been doing what you have asked me to do.

You need to get the router set to the same network as the PCs. How are the PCs getting 192.168.2.x if the router is set to 192.168.1.x and you are using DHCP? Are you sure you have not hard coded static IP address on your PCs?

Try going to the login page of your router and setting the Device IP address back to 192.168.2.1. Save this then restart your router. Then on the win98 pc, bring up winipcfg.
Click more info, Disconnect all and renew all. Give me the info that it tells you.

You do know how to connect to your router from Internet Explorer since you did give me status page info below. That was from your router isn't that right?

Just trying not to overlook the obvious. On the 98 machine did you go to the printers folder and actually share the printer. (right click--> share as)Just installing file and print sharing wont automatically share it. That would explain why you cant see it.

  28. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok should I enter 192.168.2.1 in the Start IP Address under Network Address Server Settings (DHCP) And Chas I have no clue how to hard code anything so no I have not hard coded Static IPs on my computer unless it came like that.

  29. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Yes I do know how to connect to the router.. Correct.

  30. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Yes I did that. Thank you for your help. However now I just feel like a computer moron because this is not yet resolved. :(

Thanks Corporal, I asked Drew to do that a long time ago.

Yes, on router setup tab the following should be provisioned to match what you gave me for your PCs earlier:

    Router Setup tab:
    LAN IP Address:
    192.168.2.1 (Device IP Address)
    255.255.255.0 (Subnet Mask)

    WAN Connection Type:
    Obtain an IP automatically

I have just done what you have asked. Saved all changes and now I am getting the information from the Windows 98 Machine.

    What does this mean?

  36. Drewzer03

I tried to cut and paste exactly what was on the setup page and a whole bunch of gobbly gook was pasted. I edited the message but just in case you saw what I had put before the edit I put "forget the previous" Sorry.

Make sure you release and renew as I asked. By the way did you restart the router or did it auto restart after provisioning (either is OK as long as it restarted).

  38. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

I pressed the Reset button on the back of the router. That's like restarting it right or should I just unplug and plug back in? It actually does restart after the changes are saved. I lose the connection and then get it back so I hope that's what you meant.

  39. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

That's fine. Did you get the Win98 info from winipcfg (after release all then renew all)?

  40. Drewzer03

    Drewzer03 Private E-2

Ok after the release and renew all on the 98pc this is the information it gives me:
    IP Address------------192.168.2.4
    Subnet Mask---------255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway-----192.168.2.1
    DHCP Server----------192.168.2.1
    DNS Server------------192.168.1.1

Okay. On the XP system disable and renable the network connection. The from the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties give me the same info for the XP PC.

By the way I just hooked up my AIM on another PC. I'm on line now (BossDVD1).

Ok, I've skimmed through 94 posts. I may repost some crap, so I apologize ahead of time.

Here is what I did not see in this post: Standard troubleshooting CANNOT be done from My Network Places and Network Neighborhood, or Browsing for a Network Printer.

Stop relying on the GUI so much ;)

Go to start, run on either machine. Actually do this test from 98 and XP.

From the 98 machine: \\computername where computername is the name of the XP computer on the network. Does it work? If not, whats the error?

From the XP machine: \\computername where computername is the name of the 98 machine on the network. Does it work? If not, whats the error?

From the 98 machine: \\ip where the ip is the IP address of the XP machine. Does it work? If not, whats the error?

From the XP machine: \\ip where the ip is the IP address of the 98 machine. Does it work? If not, whats the error?

Can you ping back and forth by computername? Can you ping back and forth by IP address?

This is troubleshooting that should be done right off the bat. I'm figuring the discrepancies in the IP addresses for DNS and gateway are typoes, otherwise there would be no net access.

A little more info. If you cannot ping by computername, or access the other computer by computername, then Netbios is not functioning, and you will NOT be able to map the printer.

Maybe less known to some, but one of the most common issue with Netbios not functioning behind a router is due to different nodetypes.

To find the nodetype in XP:

From a command prompt, type ipconfig /all

There will be a node and a value line. What is it?

I assume you check it the same in 98. Let me know if the value doesn't show up.

They both MUST be the same for Netbios to function.

Now, assuming all of the above is working just fine, you have another issue. You bCANNOT map a printer to an XP machine if the XP machine does not contain drivers for the printer. For obvious reasons, the 98 machine will not be able to provide drivers to the XP computer. In that case, you must first install it as a local printer, then map the port to the share name.

As long as they can ping by netbios name, I don't either. Unless XP doesn't have drivers for the machine, in which case the workaround I posted above will need to be performed.

Hello Hello Hello!!! I love the people here at MajorGeeks.com. You absolutely are awesome. Adrynalyne and Chas, you guy's are the best. I was able to print tonight from my XP wireless Notebook to my 98 Computer. I followed the steps that Adrynalyne laid out for me and I was able to get to the printer and the computer by computer name in the run menu. IT'S SOO AWESOME!! WOW! I'm soo happy words can't explain it! Thank you guy's soo much! I owe you a lot. You have enabled me to be more in-tune with my computer and the whole networking thing. It's awesome! Have a great night everyone!! :D
