hello everyone,i have a lexmark all in one, done a system recovery and the add new hardware wizard just flashes on and off repeatedly, once or twice it took all the drivers from the installation disc, but once it had finished it said that no printer was connected, only the scan and preview worked on the printer, i have checked that all the old files were removed and also downloaded the drivers from the lexmark website to try and get them in that way, once again it looked like success, but up it came again,it also just about takes a usb storage device and i got my camera in eventually.once i ran the task manager and it was just in a loop,it had 250 tasks goingand increasing by the second, had to pull the plug to stop it,the add new hardware page was repeating endlesly, the computer is fine otherwise, its xp and an hp machine.also once the drivers were loaded they didnt appear in the program list although the lexmark icon was on the screen,i would be very grateful for any suggestions, not much good without a printer or being able to add hardware, thanks for looking, yours jason

Sounds to me like this printer has some built in devices, and that the drivers are installed correctly, but you haven't added a printer!

Try this (I'm assuming you're using Windows XP - correct me if I'm wrong):

    1. Click Start --> (Settings) --> Printers And Faxes
    2. Click the 'Add A New Printer' link (or double-click the icon)

Follow the wizard to add your printer. From the sounds of it, you should already have the drivers on your system, so you shouldn't have much trouble.

Post back if you encounter any problems.

hello, thanks for reply,i have done all that, the pre installed drivers in the computer list dont includ the lexmark X1160,so you insert disc, which i do ,it reads disc, looks like it has installed, but when you go to use the printer it says there was a problem and your device wont work properly, which it doesnt,it does not seem to detect the printer atall as it doesnt appear in the programs list either, the computer seems to be having some sort of problem recognising new hardware,im at aloss, tried everything i know which isnt much, yours jason

 I have seen cases where you connect the device, then the Windoze Add Hardware Wizard starts up, and the mfr's instructions tell you to click "Cancel" (to kill the Wizard), then run their install utility from the disc that comes with the device. Might try that. Since you have already tried to install the printer unsuccessfully, you might look under Control Panel/System/Hardware/USB devices and uninstall entries such as "Composite Device", or "Generic USB Hub", or "Multifunction Device", run a registry cleaner, reboot and try again. USB Devices can be kinda finicky. Best of luck.
