WOW!I wonder if these nanotubes can be used in place of current super conductive materials, wonder how they perform when cooled close to absolute zero?

 

Last I've heard that is a distinct possibility. Fulerines are the hydrocarbons of the 21st century which we are just starting to tap, expect to see a lot of various new applications over time, both in electronics, optics, and materials technology. They promise to generate true monofilaments, super strength fibers one molecule thick, which is the ultimate slice and dice, as well as a whole new generation of super strength building materials (think fiberglass stronger than anything that has ever existed before).

Right now the main problem is generating filaments of significant length. Short filaments aren't a problem, several technologies have already figured out how to use them.

Bill I watched this series of doco's last night really great stuff part 3 has a large part devoted to nanotubes and shows how they are grown,one of the more interesting developments is that nanotubes are so strong and light you can make an elevator to space:eek Even though NASA is funding research into systems that climb up nanotube lines to space I still can't imagine it being possible.

Of course if you download the videos they are much better quality than streaming.
