I have what I believe is Privacy Protector virus.. there is a biohazard logo on the desktop that says "download privacy protection software" and a screensaver with bugs that eat the screen that comes on too. There was a Privacy Protector sword icon on the desktop. This is for the Windows XP platform. What do I need to download and install to mitigate this issue? Thanks, Mike

ok,thanks for the quick reply.. I had to do a few things out of order in the beginning, because I couldn't connect to the internet or run superantispyware. I ran Malwarebytes and Smitfraud, and was able to restore the internet connection and also was able to install superantispyware. I ran that, and am running Spybot now. I will run malwarebytes again, followed by combofix and MGtools and attach the logs in the next post. Thanks, Mike

First please go back to the READ & RUN ME and instructions for Spybot and disable Teatimer as requested.

Is the below something you installed?
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [G2] "C:\Program Files\GamingSquared\Gaming2\G2.exe"

    Uninstall the below software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {a6e4a4eb-d169-4e99-8988-250fcbafe767} - (no file)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {BE0027FB-31FF-4661-82BC-83ADCEF28F0F} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C011B3A6-11DC-431C-AA8C-1707A6AA0D82} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\urqNGvUK.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {a6e4a4eb-d169-4e99-8988-250fcbafe767} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [44464529] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\aomhxpsh.dll",b
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [My Web Search Bar Search Scope Monitor] "C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\m3SrchMn.exe" /m=2 /w
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZKxdm021YYUS
    O21 - SSODL: rCFQkrb - {44464587-EEEC-EF2D-CA4A-16BE6BB92595} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wg.dll (file missing)
    O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - file:///C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.htm

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
