PrivateFirewall Blocking Windows Scheduler

    Windows XP SP3

Anyone familiar with how I would go about unblocking Windows Scheduler with PrivateFirewall? I have set the events to wake the PC from standby, and that seems to be happening, but the events don't happen. I am assuming the firewall is stopping the event, but it's not leaving a message for me that it is doing so or giving me the opportunity to choose to allow the event. The processes are DiskDefrag.exe for AusLogics Defrag and two of them for Paragon Backup and Restore, scripts.exe and launcher.exe. I have all these processes set to allow in PrivateFirewall.

There are 7 Windows applications listed as being controlled by PrivateFirewall using a filter. These were in the list of programs by default after I installed PF as listed here:

    System services (System services)
    File Transfer Program (ftp.exe)
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services (svchost.exe)
    LSA Shell-Export Version (lsass.exe)
    Microsoft Telnet Client (telnet.exe)
    Services and Controller app (Services.exe)
Windows Time Service Diagnostic Tool (w32tm.exe)

If Windows Scheduler is being blocked behind another Windows application, as far as I can tell, the above are the only Windows programs being monitored by PrivateFirewall. Anyway, I have tried setting all of them to allow...still no success. If it's Windows Scheduler itself that's being blocked, I can't find any reference to it specifically in the list of monitored processes or in the Applications list in PF.

Thanks for any help on this one. Firewalls confuse me...

You don't say whether you have recently installed PF or whether you have used it for a while but are now having this problem?

Firewalls monitor connections between your PC and other PCs on a LAN or between your PC and the internet. Defrag programs don't fall into this group, and unless you are backing up to another computer, neither do backup programs. Doesn't sound as if your problems are firewall related but if they have only started since you installed PF you could try uninstalling PF and temporarily reverting toi the Windows firewall, though in XP that is pretty weak.

    Hey Earthling...

No it's installed now. I've had it for about 2 days now. Almost 100% sure it's blocking the defrag and backup schedule. Just can't figure out how.

PrivateFirewall is pretty comprehensive. I can use it to regulate basically everything for anything...including writing to files and the like. I guess I would say I'm an intermediate level user while Private Firewall is expert level with just enough for me to be able to break my PC with it. Honestly, I have it figured out pretty well, and I find it simpler than Comodo. It's easier to see the big picture of protection for me with PrivateFirewall.

I think I figured out the problem, but I am not sure how to fix it. I have a freeware scheduler I use to run scripts on a regular basis called System Scheduler. I set up the schedules for AUSLogics and Paragon in System Scheduler, and they ran as intended. Problem is I can't set them to wake the PC from standby like with Windows Scheduler. So, for the time being, I will use WakeOnStandBy to wake the PC 1 min before the events. I've had to do it before when I had problems with inconsistent schedules (XP scheduler can become unreliable with some programs I have learned in the past).

Basically, both AUSLogics and Paragon execute a script when the scheduled event is activated to run. So that's where the problem is. Somehow, PrivateFirewall is blocking scripts from running through Windows Scheduler...just can't figure out how or what it's blocking to stop them from running...

Ultimately, I may have to remove PrivateFirewall, but I do think it's a good program, and I would like to try to see if I can get this worked out somehow. Looked for a message board for PF but couldn't find one...

Yeah, I'm aware from your conversations with cc that you don't run a standard system, using many system tailoring utilities. Probably not wise really to have tried to second guess you ;)

Yep. It's about as far gone as one could imagine, but really only in the sense that I am combining elements of numerous optimizers...just some of the features of each. Started out as a grand experiment, but so far so good...

Don't think the schedule problems are related to the setup. I still haven't figured out how to set up XP so that the default Admin account is the main account. Anyway, I don't use a password to protect the system, so I can't set up schedules the way I have XP set up. Program schedules do run normally, though, as long as they are exported by a program to the scheduler. These were running fine until I installed PrivateFirewall, so I am sure it's somehow related to PF...

Thanks for trying. Wish I could send out an image of what I am running for others to try in VB, etc. Obviously, that won't work, so. I'm about to try out a program called OO DiskImage. Picked up a free key during a giveaway. Developers claims it's possible to migrate an OS installation to another machine, just going to take a look and read the help for now...

    :-D
