hi, i'm not sure if this problem has been posted here already, but i'll list the symptons here.

    1. I can't copy and paste any files
    2. When trying to run windows media player, it gives "Can't perform operation, low memory"
    3. My start menu bar has changed to something different from what it originally was.
    4. programs no longer show in the start menu bar.

i'm not sure what the problem is, but it should be a virus? i know close to nothing about computers, so hope you guys will be patient with me. before this, I was using the antivirus program Kaspersky 6.0, on a 30-day trial version. I cleaned up all the viruses it detected, and everything was working fine, apart from the fact that I knew there were some viruses undetected still. then suddenly, one day, i got the above problem.

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow our standard cleaning procedures:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifAfter doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
    • Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifWhen you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • CounterSpy
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

hi, thanks for the reply. i'm sorry, but i forgot to mention one thing - the problem, whatever it was, has destroyed my internet connection totally. under network connections, it doesn't show anything, while my laptop was on a wireless before. in fact, network connections doesn't appear on the start menu either. thus i wasn't able to run those online scanners under step 6...

however, i have done what i could, attached are the AVG antispyware log, as well as the hijackthis log. thanks again for your help.

Download LSP-Fix to a USB drive or a CD if possible.

After download is complete, Run LSP-Fix

Check the Box labeled "I know what I'm doing" and then click on the wsock64.dll file (in the “Keep” section) to select it.

Then, Select the >> button to move wsock64.dll into the Remove section.

Now, click the Finish Button. When the Repair Summary box appears, click OK.

(Note: If the file wsock64.dll is already in the remove section, then just click FINISH.)

Once you complete the above, reboot and attach a fresh HJT log.

Reboot into Safe Mode and try running it again, if you get that error sounds like you more problems than malware.
