   I installed this kit to help a friend develop a java client, and all seemed to be working fine. However, when I powered on my laptop today i got an error message saying " Java Virtual Machine Launcher: Invalid or corrupt jar file. " The file is in the startup section of my start menu and is javasched. Oddly, it is 0 bytes. Does anyone know what this is? Should i delete it or is it required?

   That files is the java updater. It plants itself in the startup folder to check for updates behind your back.
   You can turn it off from running at startup either by using some sort of startup monitor like Startup Monitor http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml
   or WinPatrol http://www.winpatrol.com/whyplus.html?index
   or run msconfig and disable it from there.
