I'm new to the forums and I need some help. I'm currently connected to the internet through my dial-up modem. I'm running on Windows XP and I use the Sprint DSL service through my external DSL modem. When I'm not using dial-up and I'm trying to make the DSL modem work, the phone line is connected to the modem and the network cable (RJ-45) is connected from the modem to my computer. The modem is also turned on and all the lights that need to be on are on (PWR, SYS, 100M, and DSL). The computer says that it's connected to the modem and it almost appears as if it should be able to connect to the internet without any problems, but my personal opinion is that I think there's some setting in my computer that won't let me do anything on the internet with the DSL modem. I just don't know what setting that would be. I tried reinstalling the software that came with the modem and restarting the computer, resetting the modem, all of that. I'm stuck on what I should do.

have you removed the dialup from your default connection?
does the ACT light ever blink

when you connect with the dsl are you connected via dial up?

Well, when I was connected with DSL normally, I wouldn't even need a dial-up modem, nor would a dial-up modem get in the way. The phone line is to be plugged into the DSL modem and then a network cable runs from the modem to the computer's ethernet card and it's on the internet like a network. No dialing anything. All I'd have to do is open a browser and surf. Unfortunately, it's doing everything but connecting to any sites.

but you are positive it is the modem?

I think the problem is some setting in my computer that is preventing me from connecting through the DSL modem. I have Norton Antivirus and Firewall, if that info helps. I've been able to use Norton with the DSL service with no problems ever since I got DSL. What do you suggest?

I'm doing a removal of spyware right now just to make sure....

That didn't really do anything. I tried reinstalling the modem software again and I copied down the message that I'm getting.

then on the side it says:
    What to do...?

Well, in case anybody is wondering why DSL isn't working... it's because the service is down in my area. I called the phone company to ask them to see if they could figure out the problem and they said that the DSL service was down in my area. D'oh!! They said it should be back up by the 16th of the month.
