    ** system info (summary) details pasted at the bottom of this message **

    When trying to "Add New Hardware", a Sanyo USB driver, I receive the followng message "An error occurred during the installation of the device. The operation cannot be performed on a device information element that has not been registered."

    Background:
    I'm pretty sure that I've created this nightmare, I just hope someone here can see the error of my ways and can help.

    I purchased a USB cable for my cell phone. I plugged the cable into my phone (Sanyo MM8300) and one of the USB ports on my PC (running WinXP Pro). The OS recognized a new device and stepped me through the add new hardware wizard. I pointed the wizard to the drivers I downloaded from the Sanyo website and received a message that the driver was installed succesfully.

    Next I installed an application called BitPim (available at http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/). This application provides a UI for managing your celll phone data. The first step in using this application is identifying your phone and establishing communication. I selected the appropriate phone make/model. For the communication, I opened the choose a COM port dialog which lists all com ports and categorizes them as available or unavailable. At this point, the Sanyo was listed as unavailable. The help file suggested that the cause may be that another application (such as Hotsync) may be using the same COM port. Oh, duh, ok I used add/remove programs to remove old Palm applications (don't use my PC to sync the palm anymore, I use my Mac).

    I launched BitPim again, but the Sanyo was still listed as on a port that was unavailable. I then removed the device, thinking that I should reinstall. And, that's where I am now... I can't reinstall. Plugging and unplugging it isn't recognized. Scan for new hardware doesn't find the phone.

    Suggestions much appreciated. I will respond quickly to any clarifying questions.

    Thanks

    I guess no-one knows how to correct the COM port issues or modem driver installation issues? (I'm not looking for help with the application, just the OS driver installation issue.)

    Anyone?

    Maybe what I need is help untangling my COM ports and installing a USB device. The add new hardware isn't working, nor is adding a modem. When I add the modem, I am unable to select a COM port. See 1st attachment. When I try the add hardware wizard, I receive an error. See 2nd attachment. I don't know enough about the registry to understand what I'm looking at for some of the hints I've copied below... can anyone help? (I've run AMUST registry cleaner and chkdsk).

    System info summary, modem, and port info copied at the bottom of this message.

    Here are some hints that I've gathered so far...

    A USB modem needs to look like a communications port, USB phones need to look like a modem.

    Device drivers are responsible for hooking into the right level in the host computer and for formatting URBs and interpreting the responses. The device drivers use the identification information to hook into the right device.

    Windows requires a device driver be present for any device in order to access it. It has some generic drivers, typically for storage devices such as CompactFlash readers and external hard drivers. For communication devices, the vendor must supply a device driver. (note from rjbaker_44, I have the USB drivers for the Sanyo Phone)

    Clearing out stale USB information
    For Power Users who have too many COM devices, you can remove all knowledge of existing ones by following these steps. Note that you could seriously mess your machine up (ie it won't boot) if you are not careful.

    * Device Manager - Uninstall USB Root Hubs
    * Regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
    * Clear out all corresponding keys (eg Vid_1004 is LG)
    * Need to right click then permissions then everyone full control first otherwise get permission denied error
    * Find classes. Click on key, right hand pane should give class. Numbered instances below that. Click on each one.
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} is ports
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} is modems
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Ports
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\COM Name Arbiter COMdb key is a bitmask of which com ports are in use (8 ports per byte). Set to 3 to reserve com1 and com2
