Problem installing SP1 for Vista

The owner of this laptop has Vista Home Premium x86 installed, no service pack. He wants/needs SP1 installed, and eventually SP2 also, but SP1 is required first. Anyway, the error comes up right at the end of the SP1 install (I'm using the stand-alone installer from Microsoft's download site) and it is something like this:
0x80070002 FILE_NOT_FOUND Setup cannot continue. For more information: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=101139
(the exact wording may not be correct, but the error number is exact and so is the link) so I visited the link and it listed 4 things to try, 3 of which I had already tried. So I tried the 3rd thing which was to use the "Check Update Readiness Tool" which did install an update that is required for SP1 installation. It took about 30 minutes, and I tried installing SP1 again, same error. I ran SFC, I ran chkdsk /r, I ran a full RAM and HD diagnostic. All to no effect. In the event viewer there are a few identical "lists" of errors which are from the several failed SP1 install attempts (screen shot attached). I'm still researching this, but it isn't looking real positive . . . any help, ideas, suggestions, whatever, will be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks!

(oh yeah- there is no malware, and all other system functionality appears to be OK :confused )

Well, I tried going through Windows Update. All the available updates for SP0 were already installed, so it just tried to install SP1. The resulting error is attached as a screen shot . . . I'm researching it now and figured I'd post here also in case somebody has a miracle cure! LOL

Think I would have tried doing a repair install to see if that helped. Otherwise, it is usually some malware, but not always.

I tried all the repair options available from the Vista CD and none of those worked. Due to the quantity of data and 3rd party apps the owner has installed (and of course he doesn't have any of the install CDs), and due to the lack of a "true" repair install feature in Vista (it doesn't work like the XP repair install), he decided that he would just live with SP0 for a month or two until he buys a new laptop. At that point, he'll have me migrate all his docs and data over to the new PC, and he'll have to relocate (or re-buy) his apps for re-installation. Thanks for the input though!!!

I had the identical problem with Vista a few years ago. Tried all the repair options, believe I even had a thread here. Started a correspondence with MS, was ultimately told I needed to do a re-install. For what it's worth. :wave:wave:wave
