I have an acer aspire 5315. The hdd went out so i just bought a new hdd and a new win xp cd. When installing it gets to 57% and then says it cant copy rpcrt4.dll if i skip it the laptop wont boot at all. Also if i skip that file it will get to 80% and again it states it cant copy shell32.dll. What can i do to fix this and get windows installed. I really dont want to have to buy a new pc. Thank you.

Why do you have to buy a new laptop, just because the old school OS does not install. I would say that your install CD is messed up, or bad CD-RW/DVD drive . You can try to contact Acer and see if they will send you a new set of restore discs, if the discs are royally screwed up. I am going to place a bet that your burner is bad.

But also on the other hand, that is a machine that should have no problem running Windows 7 starter, if you really have to come down to it. Just make sure that you have the full 2gb of RAM to do it.

If you bought the XP disc at a retail store take it back for an exchange. That would rule out a bad disc.

If you want you can try to copy the disc to a blank CD and see if that one will run. If either of those fail then it probably is a bad burner.

Did this laptop come with Vista?

Who knows, only if they post the service tag, would anyone know. That model was one of those that was a bleed over, when Vista came out, so it is possible. Either way, it would run 7 with no problem. Just that Aero would not run, and if it did, it would dog it down.

The cd was bought new unopened. My cd drive works. Nothing was wrong with the laptop other then hdd going out. I believe it did have Vista on it when bought. But like I said it's a brand new hdd and xp disc. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

The error you are getting suggests a problem reading the CD rather than a problem writing to the HD. It could just be a defective disc from the manufacturer, it does happen.

Really all you can do is clean the disc and try again or copy it to a blank CD to see if it can get through the copy process. Or return it as defective and let them give you another copy. If that one fails then you know it was not the disc but a problem with the CD drive.

Copying the disc is fairly easy if you have a blank CD.

Imgburn can copy the disc to the HD of a working computer and then burn it back to a new blank disc.

Use the "Create Image File from Disc" to copy the disc to an ISO file on your HD. Then use the "Write Image file to Disc" option to burn the newly created ISO file to a blank CD.

Where did you buy it? Most likely that if you did not purchase from the Acer, Microsoft, or a authorized vendor of Microsoft, you just got suckered into buying pirated fake software. Do yourself a favor and either contact Acer for the replacement restore disc's, or get a copy of Windows 7 starter at this point.
