Due to having problems with one computer, I took the hard drive (HD) out of the problem computer and put it into a working computer. The hard drive has Windows XP installed on it...

After putting it into the other working computer it seemed to install fine and it is said to be working fine in the device manager. For whatever reason, it does not show up in my computer with an assigned drive letter.

When I check it in administartive tools/computer management/disk management, it shows up, but has no drive letter. When I try to assign a drive letter, that option is grayed out, whereas I could change the drive letter on the other drive (C) that is visible. About the only option I have from disk management is to partion the drive which I don't want to do. I am not sure if it sees the other install of XP on the drive and won't allow it because of that.

I just want to get my critical files off of it, and then throw it back in the other computer and reformat it if necessary.

I am at a loss on this one, any help would be appreciated.

Have you set the jumpers on the second drive to slave?

Actually, no I have not. It's a Maxtor drive and I checked the settings for Maxtor on their website and they said that there is no need for jumpers if the drive is a slave drive???

Do you think it matters? I wasn't sure where to place them : : : . : Originally on the other computer they were on the second set from the left.

Don't know about a drive not needing jumpers. There should be a guide to the jumper settings on the case of the drive.

If your a young fella you might not need a magnifying glass to see it,but I definately do!

Oops sorry,no jumper on the drives pins could be the correct setting for it to be a slave.

I looked on the hard drive and could not see where they were supposed to go, don't think it shows where they go, but my eyes are not what they used to be.
