Problem partitioning with EASEUS

Ok, so I had created a 50GB partition to try out the Windows7 RC a while back. Now that I have the RTM, I wanted to delete the partition I created and just upgrade my OS to 7. I deleted the partition and then merged the unallocated space to my main partition. Seemed easy enough. The computer restarted and went to work. Now it's been about 29 hours later and it's still stuck on 55%. I didn't disk defrag beforehand so I'm not sure if that's a problem or not. There doesn't seem to be any way to cancel it at this point either. I don't want to shut the computer off for fear of losing files. Stupidly, I thought that since the first partition went so flawless, I wouldn't need to go through the hassle of transferring all those files. Creating the first partition took a long time (6-7 hours I think), and somebody told me that merging partitions takes even longer since files have to be rearranged on the HD. I'm just wondering if it's a lost hope now. I don't want to lose any files at all, but the chance of that seems to be decreasing. :(

Should I just try to sit it out?

    Sorry mate could you clarify....

You had one OS installed on the HDD in one big paartition, then decided to create a second partition to install Win7, you were happy with 7 so you then merged the two partitions and tried to install Win7 over your original OS?

    Is that right?

    Sorry, I'll clarify some more:

    Original Partition: Vista Home Premium
Created 2nd partition from that, installed Windows 7 on 2nd partition
Deleted Windows 7 partition, tried to merge unallocated space to original partition to make it whole again
Was planning on upgrading the vista home premium to Windows 7 Professional

Looks like you had it about right.

    Ok i get it :0

I really don't like those "upgrades" they're just asking for trouble imo, however in anyones opinion you should have backed up your data before doing any sort of partition modding or OS install/upgrade.

Im not too sure what you should do next, so dont switch it off yet!

Ive got to say though it does not sound like a good scenario :(

But if worst comes to worst your gonna have to run some data recovery software to get your data back.

I hadn't even attempted to upgrade/install the new Windows7 yet, but everybody has said that Vista Home Premium to 7 Professional just required an upgrade, not a clean install like your chart says. The most I've done with the Windows 7 professional was burn the iso to a disc in preparation to install once the partition had finished, but the partition seems to have failed. :(

The data is pretty valuable. Not end of the world valuable, but enough stuff that I've put on it in the last year that I don't want to have to download/do again... the most important thing I wanted to salvage was my music and video collection.

Hey urmom, i thought you were in the middle of upgrading from vista to 7 and it was hanging their?

it is a better situation you are in if it is just teh partition manager that has freaked out, although still not good.

assuming it is still hanging, you are gonna have to just switch it off and keep those finger crossed.

Then you have a couple of possibilties, you might get a pleasant suprise and vista will boot and you can transfer your data without a problem, or it might not boot at all and it could even crash!

If it crashes, you will then need to try some recovery discs to save your data, the first of which i recommend is booting an ubuntu live-cd and see if that can see the files, and then onto to more serious file recovery if it cant.

I did something like that a while back with Linux and xp. I wound up doing the fix mbr thing and all went well after the combining of partitions..

Sorry for the confusion, it's just the partition program that's hanging up. I'm going to leave it running one more night most likely to see if it works. I have to move into my dorm tomorrow morning and will most likely shut it down then and then hopefully be able to boot it up... should I bring my Windows Vista installation disc incase I need to do a repair install or should I just burn a Ubuntu dvd with my laptop? Once I get the data I need I'm probably just going to do a clean install if there is any damages to the OS rather than an upgrade at this point. Hopefully somebody can respond before tomorrow morning. :p

Thanks for the help so far.

Also, rosiesdad what is the fix mbr thing you mentioned?

Hey urmom, i would keep all the discs you can with you that relate to your computer, as you never know when/why you gonna need them, but make sure to burn the ubuntu disc aswell ;)

Dont worry about the mbr thingn rosiesdad mentioned right now we will deadl with that later if needed.

And once this is done a clean install will be needed!

The creation of the new partition took a long time because a load of files sitting in the 50GB you wanted to free up had to be moved down first. That's understandable, though 6-7 hours does seem greatly excessive. However, after deleting the 50GB partition prior to attempting to merge the space, there are no files to move and the operation should be short and sharp. It has clearly gone wrong and it matters little now how long you wait because it isn't going to complete.

I would switch off at this point and hope it reboots. If it does then when you try again don't attempt to merge, just resize the Vista partition to maximum after deleting the Win 7 partition. If it doesn't reboot we have a different ball game.
