    Hi there,

new to Majorgeeks ... fantastic website, I have already for it very useful. I have both a laptop & desktop at home on which I have run "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide". Followed all steps on the laptop and it fixed the malware problem I had (originating from Messenger)

Since I was successful with that I decided it woul dbe a good exercise to run the same on the desktop. I got mixed results with that one. (A lot more "gunk" on this computer).

I managed to run everything succesfully with the exception of the PandaActive Scan. The scan appears to running fine until suddenly it stops and shuts dowwn all browser windows. Unfortunately I have failed to see it when this happens, but I have tried it a number of times now. One thing to note is that I am not running it in "safe mode with networking".

Have you any idea what I might be doing wrong, as I'd like to be able to complete this step, fro what I can see from the result pane (before it closes) it has encountered a number of problems (which I have managed to extract by cancelling the scan).

Many thanks & keep up the excellent work ...!!!

If Panda is the only problem we can ignore that for now and go with the other logs. We can resolve this issue later, if you've ran all of the other scans listed below go ahead and attach those logs.

    Hi bjgarrick,

thanks for looking at this for me ...

I have follow the instruction as described in READ & RUN ME FIRST ...

All successfully run with the exception of the PandaActive scan. As I said before I have tried this a number of time all ending abnormally (& abruptly).

You will note that I have attached a pandaactive scan log. I achieved this by ending the scan before it ended itself ... I hope this might help too.

    many thanks ...

First, I notice you have Norton Internet Security installed with ZoneAlarm. It's recommended you uninstall one of them because more than one firewall will cause problems. I would recommend ZoneAlarm but it's up to you.

    Download Pocket KillBox
    • Save it to your desktop or a place easy to find.
    • Do not run it yet
Now scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://search.presario.net/scripts/redirectors/presario/srchredir2.dll?c=3c00&lc =0809&s=search&ap=b204
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://desktop.presario.net/scripts/redirectors/presario/deskredir2.dll?s=consum er&ap=b201&c=2C01&lc=0809&ac
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://search.presario.net/scripts/redirectors/presario/srchredir2.dll?c=2C01&lc =0809&s=search&ap=b204
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.presario.net/scripts/redirectors/presario/srchredir2.dll?c=2C01&lc =0809&s=search&ap=b204
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://search.presario.net/scripts/redirectors/presario/srchredir2.dll?c=2C01&lc =0809&s=search&ap=b204
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

Next, run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

Now, Please boot into Safe Mode, be sure you have the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders Enabled per the tutorial. Now, navigate to and DELETE the following if they should remain:

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine Delete everything in this folder!

    Locate PocketKillbox
(Procede with this step even if they do not show in blue)

Now, Copy and Paste C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CISVCS.EXE into the box – If it exists, it will show up in Blue. Check the option to Delete on Reboot and Click the Red X and Yes to the confirmation message. A message will ask if you want to reboot now – Click YES and allow your PC to reboot.

    • If you get an error message about Pending Operations, just reboot your computer manually.

After the Reboot, boot to normal mode and Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    Note for IE 6 users:
    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites. For IE 7 users, simply click the "Reset all zones to default level" button.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

Finally, I would like you to flush your System Restore points. Please follow the instructions in the below:

    • Disable and Re-enable System Restore

    • Turn OFF System Restore to flush any bad Restore Points.

    • Then, follow the instructions at the bottom of the linked page to Re-enable the Restore Utility which will create a fresh restore point.
After you complete the above reboot once more and then scan with HijackThis and attach the new log.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

Thanks again for helping out here ...

I have followed the steps you suggested above & I have enclosed the latest hijackthis log ...

Just one comment when loading windows after logging in the windows installer starts and results in the following error message ... "Norton AntiViris 2005 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall & re-install ..."

I did not realise that running both Norton & ZoneAlarm together. The reason I kept Norton (even tho' it's a dog) is for the protection it provides for younger users ... is there something else you would suggest as I would like to get rid of Norton completely?

    Many thanks
