i recently had a string of bad luck with virus'/malware/trojans, so i ran the procedure offered on this site. What came to be after days and hours of working on it, was computer failure. I guess I'm pretty noob when it comes to this stuff, maybe fried something?

so getting to the problem. I tried to reformat my orginal hdd, so I start my computer Hit f2 and in the bios, I set it up so my copy of Windows XP pro sp3 gets booted. It loads and does it's magic but, when it gets to the final loading stage of "loading windows" it BSOD.

i have 1 main hard drive which was first installed with my computer which is a 500g Sata hitachi. Also have a spare 160g fujisu 2.5 hdd. both tried to install/reinstall windows on, and both have the same results, BSOD.

the Fujitsu is formatted, and the Hitachi is my normal HDD.

im guessing my bios or something is messed up since the hdds are both reacting the same way.

At this time i cannot even load windows cause it asks for a boot from my cd which leads to installing windows. ive tried to load default setup and let the HDD boot but it does not work anymore..

This boot failure of windows happened right after running MGtools and computer freezing. Right before this i ran combofix.

i really just want my computer running again, any way possible.

I'm on my Dad's laptop by the way

    Microsoft Windows XP
    Professional
    version 2002
    SP3

    Dell XPS 630i
    Intel Core 2 quad cpu
    q6600 @ 2.4ghz
    1.5ghz, 3.25 gb of ram

could be hardware failure, memory in part because you mentioned swapping with known good HDD...

have you looked to test RAM?
    what is the specific BSOD?

Yes I ran the memory test with all passes. Didn't know there were different kinds of bsod. I can check in the morning but it was one of those might be a virus and if you have any new hardware remove it(which I did). If I need to be more specific I can repost in the morning.

I bet you have a bad Windows XP disc

You might want to try a different one.

The inital "setup" portion may be fine on the CD (which would explain why that portion works) but something bad on it after that.

Yea i obtained this cd from a friend that copied it from his friend. Might be bad. I'm going to try to get my hands on another set. Anyone else see any other problems i might have besides the CD?

Sounds to me like this is therefore an illegal copy. I suggest you find a legal product key on your machine to make sure the copy is legal.

I once had this problem, and the solution was that the BIOS was set to use a specific RAID (even though there was only one HDD). I switched the RAID settings to auto and then windows installed fine.

This is only applicable if your mobo has a RAID controller, of course.

So how would i go about changing my RAID to do so?

And my specific BSOD error is *** STOP 0x0000007B

i just looked into my raid config, and its only enable or disable. no auto setting.
    just says
    sata-0 disable
    sata-1 disable
    sata-2 disable
    sata-3 disable

That is the same error I got. Here is a link to to the page where I found a solution for my problem.

BIOS's vary a lot from one computer to another. I was installing windows on a Dell e520.

Could also just be a bad disk like suggested earlier.

i tried the link you sent me. Didn't work. thanks though.. i do not have the same BIOS as you so that option was not really there.
