Problem started with: "NT Authority/System Shutdown" and now multiple problems

The last few days, it began with one problem, and now everything is hitting my computer all at once.

The problem first began with a box that popped up on my computer stating "NT Authority/System" Shutdown." It told me to save everything and that my computer will restart in 60 seconds. This happened a few times, and recently that problem disappeared. I tried running a few scans but that didn't help. I tried googling the problem and other people stats that it might be a "sasser virus" and that I should run Symatec. I did the Symatec scan, and they didn't find anything.

Now, i have a red circle icon with a white "X" on the bottom right corner of my screen (next to my clock). The icon would pop up a message stating my computer is infected and that if i click here, it will download something to fix it (obviously, i never clicked it because i can tell it's a trick).

So i went thru the read me first post and followed the windows xp cleaning procedure. I was able to run SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes. I tried running combofix and I got a lot of problems. I got to the blue screen box, and it said it will need to restart my computer. So it restart, and nothing happened. So i ran it again, and it did the same thing, saying it will need to restart my computer. Combofix didn't seem to work properly. So i skipped it and went to RootRepeal and MGtools. I tried running those two programs and a box popped up stating "Application cannot be executed. The file is infected. Please Activate your antivirus software." I couldn't run these two softwares either. Now, i notice a new program on my desktop, "Internet Security 2010" and a lot of pop ups are coming up for me to update from this program. My back ground also changed. The middle of my screen in a black box says "your system is infected!" and surround that black box is a green background. Also, i can't use "ctrl, alt, delete" it says "can't be executed, file is infected."

I attached the SAS log and Malwarebytes log. I hope this is sufficient enough for you to help me as i am so frustrated and don't know what to do. I really appreciate the help!

Malware Bytes and SUPERAntiSpyware didn't find much but that is more than likely because they are VERY out of date.

Open up MBAM > click on the Update tab > let it update > install new version when prompted to do so > run a scan > let it fix all it finds and attach the log from doing so.

    Now do this:

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

Now I want you to boot into safe mode and see if you can get first Combofix to run, and then MGTools.exe. Let me know what happens, and attach logs if you are successful.

    Thanks for the help Kestrel13!

So I updated my MalwareBytes and did the scan. It cleaned up a lot of the problems: my back ground went back to normal, the icon next to my clock is gone, the "Internet Security 2010" is also gone.

I was able to run ComboFix and MGTools.exe on Safe Mood. Here are the logs. Do you think all those "problems" are gone from my computer?

    thanks again!

    1. Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode, if you haven't done so already.

    2. I want you to follow my next instructions in normal mode now please, and not safe mode.

    3. Please go to Add and Remove programs and uninstall the following software:
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 6

    4. You need to see that you tidy up the C Drive a bit. I see alot of files scattered about on there that could well be in their own folders or put into folders in another location.

    5. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    Fcopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e\atapi.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    6. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    7. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.
Are you getting the "NT Authority/System Shutdown" error anymore?

    8. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

I was able to uninstall Java 6 update 6 and installed it later on.

As for the C drive, i'm unsure on which files i can delete and where i can move them. I didn't want to remove anything that my computer might need. There are files that i don't even know what they are used for.

I have attached the combofix and mgtool logs.

As for the "NT Authority/system shutdown," i haven't gotten that for awhile. Ever since the other problems (background, internet security 2010, etc.) started to occur, the NT authority pop up never came up. But hopefully all those scans could have removed this problem.

I am referring to files/folders like the below:

The likes of these should all be in their own directories and moved to "My Documents" or someplace other than your C Drive. This will keep things nice and tidy for your benefit ;)

    Okay, let's do this:

Download the MBR Rootkit Detector to your desktop.

    • Doubleclick mbr.exe and follow prompts.
    • A black DOS window will quickly appear then disappear.
    • When mbr.exe is finished it will create a log on your desktop.
    • Copy and paste contents of that log file to your next reply.

thanks, i will put those files in a different location.

Here is the MBR log, it literally took like 5 seconds for that to create the log. Hopefully it was suppose to be that fast.

Also, i uninstalled my "Online Armor." Do you recommend i keep that, or is there another firewall i should use?

    Good afternoon :)

Well, it's entirely your choice, we have a list to choose from in the "How to protect yourself from Malware" link which will be provided in my final steps.

I use PCTools on my XP machine and with the Vista I just use the Windows Own firewall. In any case, your logs are malware free:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    hey Kestrel13!,

I notice my computer has been running slower then before. When i click on firefox, it take a little bit to load, and once it pops up, it takes a little bit to type an address.

Also, it takes a little longer for me to shutdown the computer. The box that ask "restart, standby and shutdown" takes awhile to come up.

I tried running the malwarebytes, but nothing came up.

do you think there's still malware on my computer?

    thanks:)

When I click on Firefox it takes a while for the browser to pop up as well.
When I gave you final steps I was happy you were malware free. You may wish to visit the software forum to discuss slowness. :)
