Problem Starting Windows 95

    I just purchased a Latitude D520 and re-partitioned the hard drive so that I can load multiple operating systems (Windows 95 and Windows XP). When I partitioned the drive I gave it a 2GB partition for Win95 and designated the rest of the drive for Win XP.

    I have loaded Windows 95 (without any errors), but I keep getting an error during startup:

    "Insufficient memory to initialize Windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unneccessary utilities from your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files, and restart your computer."

    I did a search on the Microsoft KB and sound several articles dealing with this problem. Most said to limit the size of RAM available for the operating system to use, so I added a line in the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file limiting RAM starting with 768 MB (MaxPhysPage=30000) and worked my way down to 128 MB (MaxPhysPage=08000). None of these setting worked and I kept on getting the same error message.

    Another Microsoft KB article said to add a line in the [VCache] section limiting the Cache size. I tried this as well with the following lines:

    [VCache]
    MinFileCache=10240
    MaxFileCache=30720

    This also did nothing for me. Can anyone give me some advice as to what is preventing Windows 95 from starting up?

    Thanks in advance

    How big is the drive?
    Would suggest a bigger partition for win95 ....

    The drive has 60GB total. I re-partitioned the drive again making the size for Win95 5GB with the rest for Win XP and still have the same problem.

    How much ram do you have installed ....would really suggest that you give 95 at least 10 gigs .....assume you've enabled large volume on the drive? Formatted that partition as non-ntfs ....

    I have 1 GB of RAM. Large volume support is enabled. Formatted as non-NTFS.

    Can you boot into safe mode?

    No. As soon as it tries to boot (normal, safe, etc) I get the win95 splash screen then it goes to the error message listed above. Prompts me to hit any key and then goes to the "It's safe to turn off your computer" screen.

    I followed the directions on the KB article about limiting the MaxPhysPage size and it still won't boot.

    The error I get during boot up tells me to remove some utilities from the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files, but when I check them, they are both empty.

    Any other suggestions?
