Problem using Visual C++

I'm currently learning C++ and had recently download the visual C++ express edition to use as practice and homework assignment but am having a lot of issue with the program. When I try to compile my written file, I always get a error message so it will not compile. I try to test it out to see whether I did something wrong or it a program by using one of the example in my textbook but that too got an error. I don't know what wrong. I could see that my computer already has Visual C++ 2008 redistribution version install but since I could not find it to open it, I decide to download another version to use. Can someone tell me what wrong. Should have I uninstall the redistribution edition first before install this one?
