Problem w/ AVG 7.5 update

I have this same problem on 3 different PC's: AVG will not update! I've tried downloading the updates and installing them manually from a folder and that doesn't work. The online updates don't work. This is true on all 3 PC's and applies to clean installs; meaning that on one PC in particular has a brand new HD, recently formatted with a new WinXP Home install. No bullsh*t software, just the drivers, video, audio, etc. All 3 PC's go online perfectly via DSL/Cable and surf nice and fast w/o any problems. All 3 PC's currently running IE6. Now, why won't AVG update??? I've tried uninstalling AVG, rebooting and reinstalling and it still won't update, either online or thru the manual 'Folder' option. When I try the Folder option, it reports that 'No update files could be found in that location' and I know damn well that the file is in that folder. The file is named 'u7f394ax.bin'. Now, I could understand if I had a problem one PC, but on 3??? 2 of which have brand new, 100% clean installs of XP Home. WHAT GIVES?!?!?!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

I just checked and and I am confirming the problem. Exactly the same reaction with auto and manual update. It must be temporarly.

Our computers are experiencing the same thing here, so it's nothing you've done wrong. Historically, AVG's update servers have issues fromt time to time. You can either update the virus database manually by downloading and installing the updates, or wait for their servers to get sorted.

Could be why I switched from AVG, ages ago, to Avast.;) :D
Never did like their update method.

Got to visit a lady on Friday who is also having trouble with AVG.
To be fair though, it probably wasn't properly installed by someone (not me), in the first place.

OK- Thinking that maybe the AVG setup file I have burned on CD was faulty, I downloaded a new copy from 'The Geeks' and installed it on 2 different PC's- one w/ XPHome, the other XPPro, both SP2. Neither would update online. And neither would update manually with the '.bin' file downloaded from here via 'Author's Site'.... One one PC, I downloaded the .bin into a folder on the desktop named 'avgupdate' and got the error msg 'The specified location does not contain any update files' or something very close to that. On the second PC (XPPro) I tried to point the update to my USB thumb drive with the folder named 'avgupdate', and again, 'The speciified location does not...'.
So I'm pretty sure that something is amiss with the updater module in AVG. I can't imagine that a total of 6 ( !!! ) PC's have the same 'problem'. All PC's have SP2 WinXP Home on all but one running Pro. I tried downloading the updates again, thinking that maybe the 1st update download was corrupted somehow and it made no difference. All PC's are clean and the Windows installs are less than 2 weeks old; one PC was formatted and loaded yesterday..... Any other suggestions???? Should I wait and see if the AVG servers come 'back online' (if they're down)??? Even so, why doesn't the manual update work? Maybe switch to Avast as suggested by Bazza.....
( long sigh...... ) Oh well.......

Note- I had AVG 7.1 (an older version) on one of the PC's 'til this morning and it updated just fine. I replaced it w/ AVG7.5 'cuz it popped up a warning that support for v7.1 was going to expire or something like that, so I installed v7.5 after uninstalling v7.1....

AVG didn't do themselves a favour by whatever terminology they used when they said support for 7.1 was going to expire.

They would have been better stating "that a new version was coming up" or notifying users when checking out updates "that a new version was available for download".

Like most other software people do.

It certainly frightened hell out of 2 old ladies that I help out with their computers.

I'm puzzled, for me AVG 7.5 updates faster than 7.1 did. Maybe you should try the AVG Free Forum for help with this.

Glad that you were able to solve the problem by updating to AVG 7.5! :)

Sometimes their servers that distribute the updates might be running slow. However, at least in my experience in various computer-related forums, most AVG update problems (both manual and automatic) are generally caused by two things - on the USER side of the equation, I mean:

The vast majority of problems users have with updating AVG (or retrieving/sending emails) are typically caused by the "improper" or incorrect settings for the affected system's firewall. The basic "correct" settings for using AVG with three popular firewalls are described in this .pdf document: Firewall Settings for AVG.

If the problems continue after trying to correct/adjust the firewall settings; it is likely something's corrupted within the AVG program itself; which can be "fixed" by simply reinstalling it. Here's how…

    (1) Download the latest AVG Free installation package from [free.grisoft.com]
    (2) Run the AVG Free install file
    (3) Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.
    (4) Restart your computer then...
    (5) Now reinstall AVG using the setup file you got in step 1 and update it.

Note: That Firewall Settings for AVG .pdf only describes Kerio, Zone Alarm and Windows firewall settings for AVG. However even those who use other firewalls can probably "get the gist of it" by viewing that .pdf.

    Good Luck!

Thanks COMPUABLE, for your usual extremely detailed reply to AVG users, but I'll stick with Avast free and Zone Alarm free.

None of this garbage to go through.
Updates done / checked, automatically each time you logon.
User ain't gotta do nuthin', once they are installed, and options set.:D

Maybe we should start a thread about these two AV. (of-course we do not even mention Norton)

Bigbazza, I must concede I've never been able to get the scheduled update feature in AVG to work. Since I'm on dialup, though, I don't really want a whole lot of programs trying to update at once when I go online anyway, so I don't mind. I like the fact that AVG is very light on system resources, too.

I'm on dialup (long story, still continuing), so I also do not have any scheduled updates on any program, except for Avast that checks on bootup.

I rely, almost 100%, on Major Geeks to tell me when updates are released (thanks MG  :D guys).

Avast has 5 processers running, when loaded, and uses around 28 megs of RAM.
I prefer ease of use, over amount of RAM used.
I have 2 gigs of RAM so it is not a major consideration for me.

I must admit that I haven't checked AVG for it's use of resources.
I haven't used AVG since my W98SE days, so I may be giving it a bad rap.

Very light indeed, 4MB. If you have a firewall, I'd check the logs in there to see if that's your issue. They do have intermittent server problems but not very often. In any case, do as Bigbazza says and get it from here.

Edit: Since you're on dialup just bring AVG up when you're on and hit the update. I don't think that a scheduled update would be good for you unless you are always on when the update is scheduled. That's the way I did it when I was on dialup. Otherwise I hit MG for the DL.

BTW I had some problems today with AVG anti-spyware. When I tried to update it said "server is not ready". I retried a few times and it finally worked

Earlier in the year, I had a problem with Avast, which I used for years. I posted my problem here and switched to AVG per M.A.'s advice and haven't looked back :)
I find that it's alot lighter on resources for me ol' dial-up.
There be 2 cents there :)

I only have 512 MB of RAM, so lighter is better. I just make a daily routine of checking my security programs for updates - Windows Defender is the only one that autoupdates, as Windows Update does a good job of not interfering with browsing.
