I'm not a user of dial-up (or PeoplePC) but my friend is having problems: the PeoplePC dials and connects just fine, but the internet won't come up. It looks like PPC doesn't have its own browser, so you have to use IE. IE just comes up with the white 'Page Cannot Be Displayed'. I've tried a couple of things, web settings back to default, different home page, etc. I tried IEFix and that didn't work. I'm not a dialup guy so I'm kind of lost here. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!! THANX!!!

Oh yeah- I've tried using 3 or 4 different modems and it did the same things w/ each one. Malware scans come up clean. H E L P ! ! ! !

In IEs Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab is their a DUN modem or ISP listed in the Dial Up box and set to Default?

Does another web browser work ok? just to rule out IE as the cause, other than not having any DUN listed as default in connections.

    Open IE explorer
    Goto tools>Internet Options
    Choose the connections tab
Make sure there is a default dialup connection available
if not click the add new connection button and follow the wizard
make sure that dial my default connection is selected
    Dial

    Good netting

Yeah: PeoplePC is listed as the default (and only) connection and 'Always dial my default connection' is checked. I haven't tried a different browser yet... I was thinking about trying FF portable- good idea? Does FF work OK w/ dialup?

Thanx for the prompt replies :)

FireFox Portable works! So the problem is with Internet Explorer. The user of the PC in question isn't exactly savvy so I'd like to get PPC working with IE, the way my friend is used to. I'm afraid that using FF in place of IE may be too 'new' for my friend and might freak him out. Should I try to install IE7 and see if that fixes the problem???? I've seen lots of problems w/ IE7 and I don't want to make things worse than they already are.... any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. THANX!!!

    start>programs>accessories>communications>dun (if win98)or networkanddialupconnections
    doubleclick on peoplepc
    Dialup dialog box will open
make sure boxes ae filled in, tick connect automatically
    choose connect
Either it will connect or the connection is not working

PeoplePC connects fine (as stated in above posts); it just won't surf/open any web sites with Internet Explorer. It DOES surf perfectly with FireFox Portable and I'd like to get it working w/ IE because my friend isn't familiar w/ FFox and would probably completely freak out with the different GUI. So I need to get it working w/ IE. I'm probably going to install IE7 and see if that repairs the problem....

I think IE7 will compound the problem not to mention the loss of system restore.

First do not open any browser at this stage.
Disconnect any ethernet cables from the pc
Then connect to peoplepc via dun.
You should have the icon in the system tray confirming connection.
    Open IE
    Goto File
Make sure 'work off line' is not ticked
Type an address into the bar, press return.

If this does not work, go back to IE internet connections note and delete the people pc connection.
    restart the computer
go back to IE internet connections and add peoplepc again from the drop down list.

Hey everybody- thanx for all your help, but this IE problem is still with me. Like I said, Firefox works fine, just not IE... I'm thinking I might do a safe 'in-place' reload of WinXP, and if that doesn't work, I'll tell my friend to get used to Firefox (I HATE admitting defeat :banghead). BUT- will Outlook Express work with Firefox Portable. I'm pretty sure PPC uses OE for their email client and, again, I don't need another problem on my hands..... THANX again to all those who helped so far!

I know you tried Dial-a-fix but I would try these.

    1. Start > Run

    2. Type regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and press Enter.

    3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll and press Enter.

Check internet options ppc has a web page as well as a customized page for the user. The firewall may be interferring. open internet options click on programs and then click manage add ons be sure the pp web control is enabled. make sure it is also the default home page on the general tab and set the browser tool to use ppc browser which i think is google.

A healthy IE should have no problem connecting to dialup internet.
Further things to try before taking the drastic step of reinstallation.

    1) Use system restore to go back to before you fixed IE and perhaps before your friend installed something.

    2) Create another dialup account by joining a free provider. I always use Freeuk for test purposes in the UK is costs a local call only.

    www.freeuk.co.uk

I have never had a problem with them and IE, even when the pc has problems with Tiscali, AOL etc etc....

    final thought

Some ISPs require custom dialup software - most use Rydial. I don't know peoplepc if this is the case with them you have to logon first with their software, you can't connect directly using IE.
