Problem w/Visual Source safe 6.0 under XP sp3

I have a laptop running XP Pro SP 3. When I try to launch Visual Source Safe 6.0 I get the following error:
AppName: ssexp.exe AppVer: 6.0.31222.0 ModName: mfc42.dll
ModVer: 6.2.8081.0 Offset: 00011852

It also generates a huge XML database which I've attached in case it means anything. This file gives an error code of 0xC0000005 at some point, which I tried to fix with ErrorEnd. No dice. I've tried a number of things, including renaming all but one of the 9 versions of mfc42.dll and registering that one, but that didn't help either.

Does anyone have any Ideas on how to fix this?

Incidentally, VSS works just fine on my main machine with the same operating system.
