    hello all,
    My brother in law has come to me to try and fix his laptop as he has done in the past. This time I can't seem to fix it.
    The problem at first was that he couldn't get onto the internet. There was an error poping up from multiple programs saying that wininet.dll was not found. So all i did was copy the wininet.dll file from my working laptop to his Windows/system32 folder.
    This got rid or the original error message but then there was another.
    This time I got "The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll".
    Again comming from about 3 programs, jusched.exe, dwwin.exe, and I think another.
    So i tried doing the same thing as i did with the wininet.dll problem, copy it from my working laptop. This time it won't let me because it says it is being used. So i tried doing it in safemode...still can't. I also tried restoreing the computer to a time before he had this problem only to get the same error message pop up "the procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll" and saying that it was unable to retore to the date specified.
    I don't think he still has his windows disk, and I know I have mine, only question is where?....I already spent a good 6 hrs looking for it :(
    I could REALLY use your help and advice,
    Thanks,
    PCS

    Did the laptop come with SP2 already loaded or did he install it at some point and was it successful? The link below might help you if you think it could be an SP2 issue.

    "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll" error

    Whenever this particular error starts popping up frequently on someone’s computer this error; it is either a VERY easy fix or it is very, very hard (or even sometimes impossible) to fix or the person who’s having this problem will need to reinstall.

    The Shlwapi.dll that's giving your brother in law's laptop the problem is actually a library which contains functions for UNC and URL paths, registry entries, and color settings.

    Here are the "Easy Fixes" – hopefully one of these two will work:

    "Possible Fix" Number 1
    ================================================
    Try running sfc /scannow from start > Run
    Note: You will need to have the XP install CD-ROM in the drive should detect and replace and faulty or corrupt .dll files (any Windows CD will do - you do not have to use the one that was installed; but it MUST be an official Windows Home or XP Pro CD)

    If No. 1 does not work - "Possible Fix" Number 2
    ================================================
    (1) Click Start - Run, type "appwiz.cpl" without the quotes then click OK (or just open Add/Remove from the Control Panel)
    (2) Then at the top of Add/Remove check the "Show updates" box and scroll down to “Windows Updates.”
    (3) Under that there will be a list of updates with little Windows Flags at the beginning of each one.
    (4) Locate and then uninstall the Windows Update for XP KB834707

    Here is the "more difficult" solution that Microsoft offers for this error…
    ================================================
    Possible "difficult" fix

    If that particular 10-Step procedure does not work, you might be able to perform an in-place reinstallation. Good Luck!

    >> Here is a place where you can d/l the needed .dll...but I really don't know if it will work for you. <<Toni_1947

    Hi Toni...

    Shlwapi.dll is actually a library which contains functions for UNC and URL paths, registry entries, and color settings. Also, the shlwapi.dll is installed as a tied component of Internet Explorer, and the version should always match that of the installed version of Internet Explorer.

    The shlwapi.dll downloadable version link (listed in your post above) which is provided at dll-files.com is for Shell Light-weight Utility Library v4.70.1155 which is actually for Internet Explorer 3.0.70.1155 and was used solely for Windows 95 or Windows 95 OSR2, and is NOT suitable for any Windows version more recent than that.

    Here are the "proper" Shell Utility Library versions installed by the different Internet Explorer versions:

    4.70.1155 - IE 3.0 version installed by Windows 95 or Windows 95 OSR2
    4.72.3110.0 - IE 4.0 version installed by Win98 First Edition.
    5.00.2614.3500 - IE 5.0 as installed by Win98se.
    5.00.2919.6304 - IE 5.01 | 5.50.4134.100 - IE 5.5 as installed by Win ME
    6.00.2600.0000 - IE 6.0 | 6.00.2800.1106 - IE 6.1 SP1
    6.00.2800.1612 (xpsp2.041207-1145) - Installed by Windows Update: IE6.0sp1-KB867282-Windows-98-ME-x86-ENU.exe (Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer - MS05-014).

    Good Luck!

    ok, so my brother in law found his windows disk...and i tried reinstalling windows, but of course there was a problem...in the process i got an error saying "an error occured copying file dtscsi.sys to C;$win_nt, blah blah...with 3 buttons...retry, continue without, or exit. So i retry with no luck and so decided to continue without...i think that may have been a bad idea. After everything finished, I was asked to restart...everything seemed to be going well untill the startup windows process bar at the bottom of the screen comes up and it get 3 bars away from the end...it just stop...freezes...and thats it....just sits at 3 bars left. Now I guess all i could do is reinstall it from DOS...but I need help as I have only done this once before about 6 years ago on my desktop after i needed to reformat my harddrive.
    I don't know if the process is different for a laptop, but it doesn't really matter seeing as I don't remember how to do it anyway.
    So, Thank you all for you help so far and your conitued help.

    Isn't dtscsi.sys a daemon-tools system file? Did you perform a clean install of windows or one of those in-place re-installations?
