I recently went through the malware removal process and now I am having issues with the CD player. I have to open and close the CD tray 3 or 4 times before it will read/play the CD (yes, I am giving it ample time). It will eventually play the CD, but I did not have this problem before the malware removal process. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What's your operating system version and service pack #?

You might try this Microsoft fix.

Can you boot to your Windows disk without any problems? And, in Safe Mode, does the drive act normally, or do you have the same symptoms?

My operating system is XP with Service Pack 3.

I was going to try the Microsoft fix you suggested, but I need to install Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 first. I just want to confirm that I need to uninstall the Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 that is currently installed on this PC. It appears this is what the Microsoft download site is advising. Anyway, I did not install it (1.1) and I have no idea what function it serves. I know this probably sounds like a stupid question, but better safe than sorry as far as I am concerned.

I have not tried to boot to the Windows disk as I have never had a reason to on this PC...would have to look and see if I can find the disk....

I have not tried the CD-ROM in safe mode...guess I should have tried it before I typed this reply......should I do that before the Microsoft fix? Could that mean that some process (in regular mode) is interfering with the CD-ROM working properly?

    Thanks a bunch!

.NET versions are independent. You do not need to uninstall v 1.1 before installing v2.
Some programs may need .NET1 while others may need .NET2

Can you post a link to where you were advised to remove .NET 1.1

If you can, please point me to the article that describes the .NET information - I would have thought that Windows Update would have taken care of that.

    EDIT: sorry, plodr! :)

Either way: regardless, try to get that MS Fix onboard.

Very possible: some 3rd-party programs interfere with optical drive functions, especially if they're corrupted or malicious.

I finally got the Microsoft.NET Framework installed. I installed the 2.0 version, but then had to get all the updates to the 3.5 service pack 1 version. I'm not sure why this was not taken care of with the Microsoft updates...now that you mention it...it appears that it should have been..I am set for automatic updates, but I still check a couple of times a month just to make sure.

Anyway, I tried to run the fix it and I got an error as follows.

"Fix it troubleshooting cannot continue because an error occurred.
We're sorry, but the diagnostic solution encountered a runtime error. Please try again later."

Doesn't runtime have to do with Java? I have the latest version 6 with update 21. I had to update that as part of the malware removal process.

In regards to the Microsoft.Net Framework material, the Microsoft website did not specifically say to uninstall the 1.1 version....it referred to earlier versions (2.0 and gave specifics which I did not understand). That is why I did a search on the web for information on the .Net Framework software. It was Wikipedia where there was information about the different versions. Since I am not a programmer, I was still uncertain so that is why I asked you...and I am glad that I did. That is why I said "it appears"......I wasn't sure.....I'm sorry for the confusion about that!

Now...what can I do about the runtime error so I can get the Fixit to run?

    Many, many thanks!!

If you wish, we can get back to the original problem and handle the runtime stuff later, if possible - bypass the Fix it, and continue on with the KB article: you've probably already tried the filter deletion, but run through it again, make sure the correct registry keys were accessed.

We'd also like to see the results of the Safe Mode/boot to disk attempts.
