I decided to upgrade my old PIV which had a 2.4 GHz 478 pin CPU. I bought a 3GHz 478 and changed the old with the new one. Unfortunately, the computer just became slower to start and even to load any applications.

What did I do wrong? I did not mess any BIOS settings...the motherboard only reads the CPU as either manual or 2GHz or 1GHz. Windows recognizes the CPU as being 3GHz.

I updated the BIOS by means of a software provided by the manufacturer. Latest update was in 2004.

Now, according to windows XP computer properties:

There's a good chance that your new CPU isn't 100% compatible with your motherboard. If my memory serves me correctly, early P IV's ran at a system bus speed of 533Mhz and later P IV's at 800Mhz.

My guess is that your current CPU is a 3Ghz if it's running on an 800Mhz bus, when run on a 533 bus, it can only hit 2Ghz.

There are many variants of P IV, even down to 400Mhz bus speed, I think - best way to find out exactly what CPU's you have is by checking the code on the CPU itself against the Intel specification page.

Checked Asus' website for CPU compatibility:

    http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4S533-E&product=1&os=17

Not seeing any 3.0 GHz CPUs listed & some drivers appear to have never advanced beyond the beta stage. It doesn't always mean that it's not compatible, it just means the manufacturer never tested it completely on their systems. However, different CPUs can require different voltages (even with the same form factor), which means the motherboard and/or the PSU may not be compatible.

You'll notice that 533 is the highest bus speed on all of those CPU's, it ties in with the 533 designation in the motherboard name, too. Later CPU's were 800 FSB, which is what the 3Ghz here is.

I just checked...my motherboard does not allow more than 533. As my cpu is 800, it is not compatible...thanks for the help and really learned a lot. Thank God that I only spent 10 quid on the CPU as otherwise I would have been in trouble.

That's a good deal for a tenner - I'd offer to relieve you of it but both my Skt 478's top out at about 2.5Ghz max - 533 bus, too :(

Check the Intel Ark page to find out more about the spec and codes for the P$'s, you may need to fill a check box to see the full stats. SL6PN and related spec CPU's are commonly the highest you can use on most earlier 533 bus boards - but check it out with a thorough Googling of the spec code with your MB model if you do decide to upgrade ;)

    Hi,

Just a thought: (Might not have anything to do with your problem)

I bought a nice Motherboad used. It had all sorts of problems. Couldn't even load the OS. Swapped the Intel 4 D. with a running Intel 4. Turns out that the "new" motherboard could not handle the Intel 4 D. Run great with the swap. The D ran great with the board the other Intel 4 was taken from. D denotes an almost DUAL CORE processor. Only partially duplicated. Probably only the Arithmetic Unit. Works great in the Motherboard that can handle it.
