    hi,

i've been using firefox and ive had almost no problems with it(except that it doesnt support activex), but lately, any website with flash in it doesn't work anymore, even though it used too. i went to macromedia's website and downloaded flash, but it still doesn't work. anyone have any suggestions?

Which version of firefox are you using?
    I recommend a (re)install of version 1.5 and (re)installing the flash plugin.

The (re) is in case you already have this version. ;)

I'm pretty sure it does but I'm not going to guarentee though. So I would recommend backing them up first.

This all depends if you install over your existing version, or if you do a clean install. When I went from 1.0.7 to 1.5, everything came across automatically, with no issues.

IMHO you need to be careful with the passwords, although the bookmarks are easy - I move and update bookmarks between profiles all of the time. If you use XP look in your profiles folder (usually in C:\Documents and settings\<user>\application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles and you'll see a folder for each profile. If you look in it you'll see a file called bookmarks.html - copy and save this somewhere, then use it to replace the bookmarks file on your clean installation, and all your bookmarks should be as you left them.

I have no idea where your passwords are kept, and its obviously encrypted to protect them, so you may just have to open the list on your current installation, copy them all, then have the grind of re-entering them all into 1.5.

Don't forget that if you do a clean install, you'll lose all your extensions as well. You'll probaly need to update them all to work with 1.5 anyway. FF will try to do this for you during the install, but for some you may have to go to the developers' home page for the latest version - the FF extensions webpage doesn't always have the latest version.

This link describes the procedure to backup and restore a user profile in firefox. This will save your bookmarks (IIRC) your passwords, etc.

    Thanks for adding that Mada.

I actually don't use that procedure, but I save my profile folder(s), create a new profile, delete the contents of the new profile folder then copy in the content of the profile I want to restore - it saves messing with any .ini files and works fine, pariculaly if you have two explorer windows open and copy beteween them so you can see what's going on.

The only issue is, as you know, sometimes FF profiles get corrupted and the first fix step is usually "create a new profile", so if you use either method to try to create a new profile with old setting, etc., you could possibly re-import the corruption.

I tend to keep a backup (using above technique) of my last-known good profile so I can always bring across the bookmarks from the latest, possibly corrupt profile into a good profile. I update my backup around every month, or more often if I've added a lot of passwords or certificates.

I didn't know you could import a 1.0.7 profile straight into 1.5 and have it work.
