I am not sure if this should be posted here or not, but I saw a bunch of similar threads when I was looking around.

I just bought a Dell system the other day and I have had problems with accessing gmail through firefox. ie works fine. Anyway, I am using McAfee and I have checked firewall settings but nothing that i have found has solved the problem. I've got windows updates going automatically but there is possibly another problem...there is a little yellow shield that shows up saying 9% of download is complete...it has been stuck there for a few days. Right clicking does nothing. I don't know if that is related or not.

Anyway, I am not sure if the answer to my problem has already been posted. So far, no luck finding out what's up.

I am pretty new at this whole thing, so if I need to post more information or be more specific, could somebody tell me?

The yellow shield most likely is windows update running in the background but halted for some unknown reason, which is why I would advise going to windows update manually at this link and updating http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

as for Firefox and Gmail, it should work fine as I have just tested mine, but what version of Firefox do you have? ( latest is 1.5.0.1 )

Delete your temp files/cache and cookies in FF and try again, their are many more experienced users of FF than me who may have a better idea.

I think the problem he said he has is that he cannot access gmail thru Firefox

zelador, have you tried shutting the firewall down and seeing if it allows access? That would rule it out if it didn't.

Also, if it is McAfee Security Suite, you may be interested in this:

    Hey,

First of all, thanks for the ideas. Halo, I visited the windows update site and got that taken care of. Apparently, an unrelated problem after all.

I tried cleaning out cookies/cache, but that didn't work.
I also tried disabling the firewall temporarily, but that didn't work either.

One other thing that might be related: For some reason, McAfee's Virusscan got shut off twice in just a few minutes. It seems to be okay now. P.S. I do have McAfee's Security Center and nothing else.

Anyway, if there aren't any more ideas, I can live with using ie for email. It is more a question of convenience than anything else.

    Thanks,

    zelador
