Problem with IE after installing Outpost and AntiVir

I recently posted regarding an older computer I have, a Compaq with Pentium 200 processor, 32 MB Ram running Windows 98. I was looking for free firewall and antivirus programs that would run on this computer. It was suggested I try Outpost and AntiVir. I installed both of these, even though Antivir said it needed 64 RAM and recommended 128. Then, when I connected to the Internet (I have dialup), It would load a page, but then the Internet Explorer box would pop up indicating that it had experienced a problem and needed to shut down. This would occur no matter what page I went to. Of course I tried rebooting several times with no success. Then I removed these programs and tried again. Again the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to get IE working again?

Suggest the first thing you do is add more RAM. I recently tried to install Zone Alarm and Avast on a friends old PC with 64mb of RAM. After installing those plus some other cleanup programs, the PC had only 3 mb spare after booting up. This with twice the memory you have. I have 192mb of RAM on my old W98SE desktop and still have to monitor free RAM all the time for best results. Try for at least 192mb, (3 x 64mb), better still 256megs (2 x 128 or 1 x 256 stick), if your motherboard and BIOS will support that.

When you run EVEREST, Click on "Computer" icon, then on "Summary", then on "Report" (at top menu), then on "Quick Report Summary", down to "Plain text". Save it to a file, as whatever name you like, (maybe PCddmmyy--with ddmmyy being the current date). Then it can be posted for all to see.

You can try to repair Internet Explorer.

We have IEFIX, or you can go to Add/Remove in Control Panel, highlight IE on the Install/Uninstall tab and click Add/Remove then Repair.

I am considering adding more RAM. Unfortunately the most I can have is
80MB. Don't know how much difference that will make.

More RAM will help (speed things up), but it won't fix the problem with IE.

I understand that adding more RAM will not solve the IE problem. I will try your suggestions for repairing IE. Also someone else suggested downloading IE from the Microsoft Website onto a CD on another computer and installing that. They said that I would not be able to remove the old IE program by itself but that I would just install the new over the old. They also said that, as a last resort, I would have to reinstall Windows 98 (not something I would look forward to). Comments?

Try add/remove or IEFIX as suggested.

If that fails, you should be able to install Windows over itself without losing any programs or settings.

Failing that, and as a last resort, you will have to format and reinstall.

Bear in mind that IE problems can be very hard to fix.

I know you won't want to hear this...but the computer is simply too old.
Even with all the upgrades you could give it...it's not going to be "fast".
'98 is no longer supported and you won't be able to get the security updates you'll need if you do a reinstall or even have the disk space for them.
You don't have enough memory to handle the security programs you'll need to keep the "Bad Guys" at bay.
Unless it's ALL you have....I would put it out to pasture.
Use it for data storage...off the internet.

No one said it was going to be fast.

    Regardless, IE should still work.

As far as putting it out to pasture, he/she may not have a choice.

Not everyone wants, or has the money, for a new/er PC.

You might want to upgrade your hardware to pentium 4 + 512 megs of ram plus a motherboard that will work with them, or just as you mentioned put in 80 megs of ram but i too say it wouldn't help your ie problems.
