I just got a new Dell Dimension E310. Windows XP SP2, Media Center Edition 2002. I use Internet Explorer 6 SP2, and the following McAfee programs: Virus Scan 10, Personal Firewall Plus 7, Privacy Service 8, and Spam Killer 7.

Internet Explorer will not open http://www.lake-mills.k12.ia.us/ which is a site I visited frequently on my old Windows 98 computer, with Norton AntiVirus, so I know the website is currently available. Also, on my homepage, http://www.wctatel.net/ there should be a box that displayed the current temperature, and was clickable for the forcast. The box was also always there on my old computer. I currently have McAfee Privacy Service and Spam Killer turned off, as well as the Windows pop-up blocker. I tried using the Foxfire browser, and the same problems persist, so I'm wondering if the problem is with McAfee. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  2. I had the same problem and the answer is Mcafee's Privacy Sevice, Remove it with Add/remove or manually remove it

I have Virus Scan 10 and can go to the Lake Mills site just fine. I can also view the temp box and click on it to go to weatherunderground-- no problem.
I am not using Personal Firewall Plus. On the pc with Virus Scan 10, I chose to use the WinXP firewall.

I can see all of the same things on my other pc using Zone Alarm Security Suite. I uninstalled Norton to put Zone Alarm on this pc.

I was using the Opera web browser though (by far my favorite and the only one I normally use).

I just tried it with IE 6 and that also worked just fine. I have to say though that IE 6 was faster than Opera 8.52 (8.54 is out). Surprised me!

I don't understand what is happening with your IE. I just clicked on the link and the website came up immediately. Both IE6 and Opera work fine.

You don't somehow have that site blocked in Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Sites do you? I have all defaults there. I also have
pop-up blocking enabled and can see that the site wants to send me a pop-up but I haven't opened it.

You could download Opera and give that a try to see if it is your IE6 or somehow your ISP or whatever blocking it. Opera is a very small download
and takes just a couple of minutes on a slow connection-- a few seconds on a fast connection. You can run them both with no problems-- I have for years.
I have them both open right now and there is no conflict or problems. Also, it is nice to have a backup browser.

I downloaded Opera, and have the same problem. I can't find anything in my security or firewall settings that should be blocking the site. I have no clue what the problem is!

It seems to me that if you can go to other websites and since the problem doesn't seem to be your browser(s),
then perhaps your isp is the problem. Do you think they could be having a problem with a dns server?
