Problem with Java (I think!)

I'm running XP Home, IE, Windows Defender and have just downloaded Livecare.

Problem I'm having seems to be related to Java in some way. Basically, I can receive e-mail but not read the text (although accessing via Mail2Web works) cannot use smilies, and when I try to register the Livecare I am not getting the 6-figure code necessary. Clicking the mouse on the icon for getting another number gives an error message in the bottom left of screen, namely Java "something" (false).

Can anyone help please? The more I look at it the more I think I've been hijacked, but being a bit of a PC hick I'm not sure!
