:cryI tried posting this on another topic... but still have the problem... to start with, I do not have any spyware, ad ware or viruses on this machine. I have run all onboard diagnostics and anything DELL had to make sure it was not hardware. The computer has XP Home edition. 1.4 ghz, 2 gig ram, 120gig Hd, 3/4 of the hard drive is empty...and I have a dedicated video card. Now...

things were going great UNTIL the Windows 7 update.. then all the other things it added... I have had SP3 since in the summer and did not have issues with it... but once 7 was installed I first had problems with my Outlook Express freezing... I couldn't hardly do a thing without the whole computer freezing up. Did a restore to an earlier point and got it to where I could atleast start it..had the blue screen a couple times and it said that it could have been a software install that was not right... anyway...did some searcing and found out that there is NO update for OE when you go to IE7...you have to go to Windows LIVE...which I did... but that helped some but I still have an issue with my JPG pictures which I rely on for my work. when I would right click on a JPG and tried to save as... the computer froze... if I tried to embed a picture in an email, it froze, when I tried to upload a jpg to my yahoo website, the computer froze...I have to shut off the power and then restart to recover from this everytime... I was using a program that I have since removed because it was no longer operating... Photo Expressions...this is my favorite editing program for my jpg to resize...but when I would try to even select a picture within the program it would freeze up the computer... I can right click on a jpg and email it to myself then do a save as a eml attachment...then open that with the Widows picture viewer and resave it as a jpg before my corel can open it... this is a lot of work for what I use to be able to do... remove the IE7?... then I would lose the Windows live and I like it as it lets me send and recieve all my email from one location instead of having to log into multiple accounts... so I do not want to lose that... can IE 7 be removed and things go back to what they were and I keep the Windows LIVE?... what am i missing...someone told me that I was missing...gdiplus.dll and I did not find it in a search...so found that and copied it into several places to make sure it was in the right place... no difference...Does anyone understand what I am trying to say here?... I just don't know where to go from this point... and I do not want to have to redo this machine... I would have alot of down time till I got everything up and working again...and this is my business...I just got this computer in May 08...it is a Dell Vostro 1500

Can you go into safe mode with networking and see if the freezings still occur?

Wondering the make and model of the Dell machine in question. Have an emachine with a 1.3 ghz processor that maxes out at 512 of RAM, and that is after an uprgade of the graphics card. Machine had the same symptoms as yours when the RAM was increased to 512 from 384. Problem with onboard graphics loop and lock. Ran a debug on the dump after a bluescreen. How to found here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35246. Then after using Google to search for the problematic driver file found the solution was to disable the onboard graphics and install a graphics card.

I have a dedicated graphics card...made sure of that when I ordered the machine... I will try the safe mode and see if that produces the same thing...had not thought of trying that...had to use safe mode to get it running right on one ocassion...I have two gig of ram and am thinking of upping that to 3 atleast...this is a laptop and I find I am more familiar with the innards of a tower... so this is fun to try and work with...but not insurmountable...but still hair pulling at times

A new computer in May 08 and it's only 1.4GHz? That doesn't make sense.

Not correct. Yes, there is not OE 7, but you can merely continue using OE 6 with IE 7. Upgrading IE from 6 to 7 does not affect OE 6, it continues to function just fine.

What in the world possessed you to try Windows 7, an OS under continuing development and not yet released for normal distribution, on your computer which you use for business? When you combine that with the fact that you not a expert user, as indicated by the content of your original post here, delving into Windows 7 seems like very poor judgement. Why did you to it?

I am set for windows to do automatic updates...yes I know... bad move... so it was installed without me knowing it was going on...I should have checked it first... but that is hindsight... I hate to go back and start fresh but I guess that is going to be what I have to do... I just need to save all my emails before I do it...they have alot of info in them that I need... I guess your supposed to start fresh with the new year but I did not want to do this... I am a novice on some things... like software conflicts...but I can build a computer from scratch...just can't tell you how they work... if that makes sense...and I can't find WHERE to contact Micro soft about this to see if they have a fix...duh me...and no I am not a blonde... just act like one sometimes...going into safe mode did not help much...I could get to the save as...but then nothing...no freeze up...just spinning its wheel and not responding... if this were Vista if would probably work... I think the IE7 was made for Vista and just MS way of trying to push us die hard XP users to upgrade... what I have seen of Vista I don't trust...so does this make me sound more spacey?...

Windows Automatic updates does not install Windows 7. If it did, millions of Windows users would be in a mess now. So, if you're saying that's how you get into this quagmire with Windows 7, that a mystery that you may want to investigate further. Something went awry there.

No, IE 7 is definitely designed for XP as well as Vista. And, as I said in my previous post, OE 6 and IE 7 can live peacefully together.
Well, why not stick with XP Home? I have used Vista on a notebook PC since July 2007 and like it. But, I continue to use Windows XP on my desktop PC and have no intention of changing that for quite awhile, perhaps several years.

I plan on staying with XP until I cannot ... so that should be a while... but can I run my OE6 with it?...it would not when I tried...froze constantly...I have the IE7 on another machine that runs XP Multi Media and on one that has XP Pro and neither had to be moved to Windows Live to operate the email...so I wonder if the Home Edition is part of the problem ,I have a corporate copy of XP pro I could try... but until I get this mess staigthened out... grrrrr... I did an export of my email... but it saved it as WLM and that will be a problem if I go back to OE6 won't it?... not the same platform... can I remove the IE7 and retain the Windows Live?... do you know where I can write to MS and ask them if there is a solution?... full of questions ain't I?...but that is how I learn...I bug people...LOL...

That's because something's wrong with your computer. As I previously said, OE 6 works fine in Win XP, even with IE 7 installed.
So, you're using OE on those two computers? No, I'm sure Home Edition is not the problem as far as OE in concerned.
If you have the option of installing a legitimate XP Pro, why wait to straighten out the problems you're having with Home Edition?

Why remove IE7? It's a better brower than IE 6. I don't know about getting email messages transferred from WLM to OE; I don't know whether it will work. If not, just continue using WLM, and IE 7. The system requirements for WLM are Win XP SP2 or Vista. So, if you format the hard drive and reinstall Win XP Home, be sure to update Windows to SP2 if your CD does not include SP2.

Do you have important files, email mesages, etc. backed up in case you need to reinstall Windows?

Well now it is a moot point...things started freezing up without being in anything...this is how it all started..so I backed up what I could and I redid it all... I like the IE7 as it does run on my other computers...but it just was not working on this one... don't know why...and now I will do without it... I had SP2 in the restore so that is on... but will probably not do the SP3 unless it becomes a have to thing. This laptop is mainly used for digitizing machine embroidery designs and it does not need all the whitsles and bangs... but I would like the windows live back.. I could back up all I wanted in that and I doubt the export I did will work in my OE6 so I have lost somethings but I think I will survive... Pay pal keeps a record of my transactions...so I have that from them .. my work was backed up on to an external so that is safe I think... I will just have to be content to not do "special stuff" on this one... will play around with the others instead... thank you for your time... :) I just need to get smarter in my old age and not dumber:wave
