Heya, I currently use a hp m8000n desktop comp these specifications

To sum it up, a M2N68-LA motherboard and a integrated soundcard with a 6150SE video card built in, though I replaced it with a ATI Radeon 2600 hd pro some time ago.

I had my hardrive fry soon after I bought it, so HP replaced it, but they didnt give me any CD's or anything to load my devices and vista back on, only one I have handy is XP Home.

My issue is similar to the fellows on this thread who couldnt get xp to run at all on his comp, but I already fixed most of that.

My problem right now is I dont have sound after I installed the sound drivers recommended in the other link, motherboard, windows service packs, and graphics are all up to date. I also have 2 PCI Devices that are unknown in windows device manager, under other devices. (And since my sound isnt working I suspect it has to do with soundcard, though it does show all my sound drivers functioning alright for the High Definition Sound).

On a sidenote 94.24_forceware_winxp_english_whql.exe (which I believe is for the geforce 6150SE card) cant detect any devices for which it has drivers for.

Been at this for almost all my free time for the last few days trying to get everything to work, some help with this last issue would be greatly appreciated.

Also was just looking over the drivers, in driver properties it lists the location as unknown. As far as I can see xp wont acknowledge that my sound card exists.

You should be able to use the RealTek ALC888 audio drivers available here
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Realtek_High_Definition_Audio_for_2KXP03_d4902.html
And your chipset drivers are here http://www.majorgeeks.com/Nvidia_nForce4_Driver_32-Bit_d4489.html
And, yes, the 'forceware' drivers you mentioned are for the on board video. If HP supplied you with a new hard drive, they should be able to supply you with recovery disks. A friend of mine had his hard drive crash and he simply emailed HP support with his serial number. They supplied him with a secure link where he entered his name and credit card number, and 3 days later he had a full set of XP Media Center discs complete with drivers. He only had to pay shipping of $15 or so....

Yeah I finally caved in and had them mail me the vista recovery discs, though I dont have to pay for it as it is included in my waranty, since it was their hard drive that didnt work. Already installed the realtek drivers, the driver location says unknown, and the PCI device is still unidentified.

The chipset link you gave me loads really fast, and above the blue bar says please wait, then it closes, and doesnt seem to be doing much, and it closes really fast.

Still the root of the problem is that windows XP Home wont register the onboard sound/video card, still listed as unknown pci device. In the morning Ill try disabling my radeon in Bios and using the onboard one as default to sorta force xp to pick it up. Not sure if thatll help with the sound though.

I stumbled across this... driver for RealTek HD Audio for WinXP at the HP web site. It's for a different model PC, but the sound chip is the same.... even though you don't really need it at this point, why not....

If you're running a video card, you don't need drivers for the on board video.... just disable it or leave it alone.

    Here's another

The reason some of the other sound drivers aren't working could be because you need the Unified Audio Architecture (also known as the UAA) update from Microsft. I've had this "update" cause me numerous problems in the past because (as far as I can tell) it's not available from Microsoft. Install this before installing the sound drivers

Yeah I came to that conclusion as well after my disabling video card didnt work, was the UAA HD Audio Bus card that my comp wouldnt identify. Ill uninstall the audio drivers and give it a shot with those links.

Just realised that I had already tried using that patch to install the UAA, it seems to go alright but doesnt really change anything. The other file I have that Im supposed to use after says that UAA must be installed, just seems that the system doesnt recognise my sound card at all, possibly xp compatibility issues.

On a side note lots of other people having this same issue, getting everything to work but the sound card with this particular motherboard when switching to xp.

The audio codecs, and Legacy Sound support drivers show up in device manager, but for all of them it says under manufacturer (Standard system devices). And under location it says Unknown. Also tried using the WDM_R184.zip and telling windows to search that folder for the drivers location for my unidentified PCI device but alas no luck.

Has a good link and pretty much covers most of the stuff. Though lastly I still have 1 PCI device that is unidentified under PCI Slot 3, Bus 2, Function 1.

Edit: Found the last one, it was the UAA Bus device, I was finally able to use the realtek installation that requires you to have the UAA installed already due to their patch. Thanks for your help though!
