Hi there, I have the same problem with my Compaq laptop N800v. WinXP Pro I lost sound in my left speaker, and then a week later the other speaker too. Odly at around the same time my internal microphone got stuck constantly on and the sound of my typing came out of the speakers!! I'd also get a loud feedback whine when I close the lid. Muting the volume and changing the settings didn't change anything and I've had to plug headphones in to stop the annoying feedback (and amplified typing) coming through the main speakers - which therefore seem to work. I tried to mute/turn off the microphone using the SoundMAX control panel, but the mute checkbox did nothing and the volume slider raced back to the top when I moved it down. It would be hilarious if it wasn't my computer! So I re-downloaded the audio drivers from the HP/Compaq website and am now at the same stage as other members in this thread. I have no volume icon in the system tray, and SoundMAX control panel has all the settings greyed out. Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver has a yellow exclaimation icon and driver properties state: A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32) Please help, the feedback is so loud and annoying it rivals my girlfriend.
