I recently had excellent help from this site to remove a virus.

I have a LAN with a Netgear Modem Rooter, a Desktop (Windows 7)(Intel Pentium, Dual CPU 1.8 GHz; 3GB RAM) and a laptop (Windows 7). My daughter when she is home also connects. Two printers connected to the desktop

I had no problems in the passed. We are both wired and wireless.

After the virus removal, we were unable to print from the laptops, but could print from the desktop. From the desktop, I cannot see my laptop; from the laptop, I can see desktop.
On my laptop, it idicates that the printers are off line.

After searching the internet, I realized I had problems with network discovery. The settings on the desktop were all "off". I changed them to on, save, but next time they were off again.

This is what I did on the desktop:
    Changed SSDP Discovery to automatic;
Function Resource DNS Client;(not sure if I changed)
DNS Client(not sure if I changed)
    UPnPDevice off, changed to automatic

I also followed this link to check if DNS Client is OK:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...s-by-reloading-the-dns-client-cache-in-vista/

After doing all this, the only one that does not change back, is "Turn on network discovery"

    I attach a screenshot:

I hope anyone can help- I'm at my wits end!!

Let me see if I understand you correctly, you have two printers physically connected to the desktop and want to print to them from the laptop? In your screenshot I noticed that file and print sharing is not turned on. Turn file and print sharing on, go to devices and printers, right click on your printer, select properties, click the sharing tab, and verify that it is shared on your network. If it is not shared then you need click the box that says share this printer on the network. I hope this helps.

    Further to padams,

Make sure the host computer is sharing the printer, and all network shares are open.

Using the laptops, connect to the printer-host computer on the network (\\computername) and see if you can see the printer.

If you can, right click and try and connect.

Make sure drivers are correct (32/64 bit enabled) on host machine, also download drivers for each laptop and use the manufacturer software, might have a network scanner tool.

Make sure the host has no firewall program, if so temporarily disable and check to see if you can connect.

    Let us know,

    Simon

I just want to quote some parts of my initial email. Please note, that I have worked for years like this with the current printers being set up like this, even when my laptop had XP and desktop Windows 7, i could set things up. I also used SyncToy to synchronize between the laptop and desktop.

    .
I checked again now, from my laptop, I can see the printers.

These settings that I am referring to, are the "advanced sharing settings" (my attached screenshot)

I changed the settings to "on", saved it, but every time, when I open advanced sharing settings, they were off again.

I trust that I made myself clearer. Perhaps we should ask someone at the malware forum, if it could not be a remnant of the virus, causin this??

    Thanks for any advice!
