Problem with network or router

Hey guys, need some help here.

I don't know anything about networks or routers, I just wanna plug it in and have it working :-D

For a few days, we'd get the exclamation point on the network icon occasionally. Then it was every 3 or 4 minutes. So annoying. This was on 2 different laptops.

We tried resetting the cable modem and router, it would work for a bit, then do the same thing. My husband hit the reset button on the router and it wiped out the network we created. So I made a new network, everything was fine on my laptop. None of the other devices can connect, or if they do get connected, it goes in and out. When it won't connect it gives a DNS error, saying it the address doesn't exist. This is driving me batty.

If I turn off everything, then turn on the modem and one laptop (one that previously wouldn't connect), it will work just fine and nothing else will (one that previously WOULD connect). So it's like only one at at time will work. Sorry if this is confusing, it's been a long day. :cry

3 laptops, all running windows 7. One is currently online and the other 2 say connected but no internet access. Xbox doesn't work either.

 

Can you change one of the non functioning laptops to a static ip, something beyond the dhcp range of the router? For speed, try a public DNS server with it, say 8.8.8.8 . Does that help at all?

 

Thanks for your post. My husband got so frustrated in the time since I posted that he went to walmart and bought another router. And it works fine, all laptops, iPhones and xbox are connected.

Not a waste at all, that's one of fastest, most sanity saving fixes I go to for myself! Glad it all works again.
