Problem with New CPU

I have a Sony PCV RX-650 PC with a 1.6 Ghz socket 478 P4. I read on other forums that I can upgrade it to a 2.4 Northwood. I bought one online and installed it. Temperatures on bootup at around 35 C. Everything runs fine for a while until the PC shuts itself off. When I turn it on, the Hard Drive light will stay on and not load any more further than that until I wait for a while. Anybody happen to know what I might've done wrong? I applied a thin layer of Arctic Silver Thermal Paste on the CPU's surface before I attached the heatsink again.

    Thanks

Did you load failsafe defaults when first starting with the new cpu ?
If not, do that and recheck- The bios has to be set that way .

Yes, I have also tried that. I now receive an extreme weird issue. When I go into the BIOS and try to modify a setting, a bunch of static forms and I am inable to go any further. If I dont go into the Bios, it will output a "Bios update data incorrect CPUID 00000F29"

    Thanks a lot

Check , if you can the logs, in computer management (right click My Computer, manage, system tools, event viewer, applications, and let us know.
It t might mean your bios does not like the new cpu, or, it might have corrupted the bios. If you turn everything off, unplug power supply, and try changing the jumper to the next pins (consult your manual), for 30 sec/ one minute, then putting it back how it was, this should clear it. - Don' leave off any loger than necessary.

Well, I currently cannot go into windows at all. I tried resetting the CMOS but I still get stuck at "Bios update data incorrect CPUID 00000F29". The BIOS config is still acting really weird. I have heard success stories for others who have also upgraded the CPU to 2.4.

You might need to replace your old cpu, and see if it does the same.
Did you update your bios before upgrading? - or, since upgrading ?

The original CPU doesnt seem to want to load now either. You think the mobo is done for?

Did you take antistatic precautions when changing cpu's ?
It sounds like it could be static damage.
Try removing the cmos battery, if it is not welded, for a few minutes, and replace it.

When you tried the jumpers, did you move the jumper to the 2-3 position from 1-2, or 1-2 if it is was 2-3,
then turn on the system, wait a few seconds, then turn the power off. Then, move the jumper back to the original pins

If removing the battery for 10 to 15 minutes does not work, remove it for 24 hours, and then try again.

All the 1.6 processors in my list are 400 Mhz bus. The 2.4 processors come in 400, 533 and 800 bus flavours. Can you post the SL number printed on the Processor?

It sounds like a BIOS problem- locate and download the latest BIOS for your motherboard/PC. Flash the BIOS according to the manufacturer's instructions. Follow them PERFECTLY or you may end up with a Sony doorstop. I think the BIOS you're running doesn't like the new CPU and needs to be updated.......

Oh yeah- what happens if you put the old CPU back in? Does the PC run OK? If so, flash the BIOS like I recommended above, but do it with the old CPU installed to make sure that the BIOS is 'happy' when it's flashed. Reboot once or twice after flashing, then re-install the new CPU......

As Hopperdave also said - did you,/ have you tried updating the Bios, prior to installing upgraded cpu ?

These are the reasons why we need to know.
