Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. I would appreciate any help you could offer. I'm having a problem with my NIC card(s). I am trying to set up my computer to access the internet via a Motorola Surfboard cable modem. However, my computer keeps saying "Network Cable Unplugged" and not connecting. Under device manager, it says my adapter (an integrated Realtek) is working fine. So I uninstalled and reinstalled my adapter. But it still gives me the same message. So I decide to just buy a new card (a Linksys) and install it in an empty expansion slot. I tried all 3 slots, and none work. The computer recognizes and installs the card, but the lights never light up, and I am still unable to connect. I am certain the cables are fine and the modem is fine because I am able to connect my laptop to both. I just don't understand why my computer refuses recognize any adapter but lists them as working properly. Any suggestions? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Don't know if this will apply (and by the way, welcome to MG's!!), but had a situation where my NIC would stop lighting up .... same message ...had to power off and wait anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours and then it would recognize the card (same thing as you with device manager ....said it was working!!) Contacted the 'puter maker and they suggested I download an updated chipset driver .... seemed to work. E-mail the maker and tell them the problem, or see if they have an update on their website. (Check that the NIC driver is up to date as well).

Click on Start -> Run -> type in "CMD", press enter.

When the command prompt appears, type in the following in this order(without the quotes):

    1. "cd \"
    2. "ipconfig /all > tcpip.txt"
    3. "route print >> tcpip.txt"
    4. "ping 127.0.0.1"

For #4, do you get a reply? Also, look in the root directory (the very first window that appears when you double click on the hard drive icon in my computer) for a file called 'tcpip.txt'. Please paste the contents into your reply, along with a response to my first question.

Integrated NIC cards require separate and updated motherboard drivers to work properly...the motherboard drivers ,specific to your brand and make of motherboard (chipsets, model name, etc.) will determine the correct drivers to be used for your integrated NIC card to work...update the motherboard chipset drivers and the corresponding NIC drivers to complete the integration and it should work fine...if your PCI slots aren't operating properly then the motherboard chipset drivers are not configured properly but do not remove the original motherboard chipset drivers...update them with the driver install utility and it will remove the old driver and install the new drivers...any OLD drivers, videocard, soundcard and NIC , will have to be removed (individually) ,as well, so that the new drivers can replace or rewrite the old.

When I originally skimmed your post I thought you had just gotten the computer. Usually out of the box premade computers don't require an upgrade to their chipset, so I figured TCP/IP wasn't installed properly, which is why I had you ping your loopback address.

I strongly suggest you follow TimW and Doomster's advice, it will most likely resolve your problem.
