Problem with Scrap/Document Shortcut

I'm running XP SP 2. I'm trying to copy a folder to my desktop or to another folder and I keep getting the following message:

"Unable to create and store scrap/shortcut object %1 could not be found."

I've been fooling with computers for 20 years and consider myself a knowledgeable user but I have never seen this message before. Can anyone tell me what this is and what I can do to correct it.

If your anti-spyware and virus programs are not up-to-date I would also run the Read Me here, corruption could also be caused by a virus or trojan.
