problem with sound

My friend have ASUS P5S800-VM motherboard
512 MB RAM
installed the latest sound drivers
computer is no older then 1 year
40C speed fan temp
250 MB free with freeram XP

the sound is okay except when i open msnmsg or even a website
then the sound is screwed up for a few seconds.

what can be the problem?

hey lspmaster, there are a few things to try:

First, you do not really need freeram xp, from my understanding xp handles memory well enough to do away with ram utils.

Second, do you have up to date chipset drivers installed. It sounds like when the hard drive is operating it distorts the sound. It could be that the drives are in PIO mode instead of DMA, which could be the culprit. Installing the correct chipset drivers should fix the problem.

By the way, what is the sound card, built in or an add in card?

how do i change from PIO to DMA?

 

Download nero infotool from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=120

Run infotool.exe, wait for it to do its thing, then select the configuration tab. It will tell you if DMA is on for each of your drives.

As i said earlier, make sure your chipset drivers are up to date
